Technically, though, bringing back Will is still recycling.

But of a different sort...

Yeah its recycling with someone interestingly talented and hardworking.

Which is um... unusual over there.

And I'm still laughing over the Ruprecht!Mark comment, because it is SO TRUE. It's a disease.

LOL! Oh, burn.

I've never seen Rent on Broadway, but it always amuses me whenever there's a cast change, because inevitably, they're no stranger to the show.

"I'm not sure if your kidding around or whatnot. But I think Marcus is such a fanastic Collins that it is terrible to see him as Mr. J."

anne3, I was definitely serious. I love Marcus. Ask anyone that's talked to me about Rent- I GUSH. re: Will Chase in Rent I met him at the stagedoor and I just gushed over how much I love his Collins, then just kind of smiled at Philip Dorian McAdoo who was actually on as Collins that night. Seeing him stuck as Mr. J when there's such a mediocre Collins on is just depressing.

Matt is like... the horny teenaged-boy version of Mark, and I resent it. A lot. I'm really sorry that Mark is sex-starved at whatnot, but that is SO not the point of the character; it irks me to an infinite degree that Matt choses to focus on that.

This is where I come in with being not intelligent with Broadway...I don't know if you have to be to see this in people...but...I remember a long time ago, when Matt was just coming in I was hearing that so many people were excited to have him playing Mark. I didn't hear it here, as I didn't know this place existed, but I just heard it around. --- Now, I tend to always like the "Marks" -- I used to love Trey! But I wasn't extremely impressed with Matt as Mark. --- However, I mean, how are you getting a completely weirded out vibe from him compared to other Marks? I mean, saying he is the horny, teenaged-boy version....I've only seen him as Mark once...is it just the way he was walking around on stage and stuff? Because I didn't pick up on any of that, I just thought he was kind of...dull in a way. But how far can they stray if they are all doing the same lines? Is it a personal thing? Because a lot of people seem to not care for Matt.

I'm just confused.

Apparently Matt has changed a lot since he first joined. I last saw him at the closing perf of the Benny cast and was so happy to hear he was going to Broadway -- but apparently everyone started turning on him when it appeared he no longer cared.

Watching Matt as Mark is like watching the 2nd grade boy in the church christmas nativity pageant on the third night.

First two nights he does ok, third night he starts picking his nose and trying to push over the manger because he is bored.

Will probably is too old, but it's much easier to hide someone's age onstage (where there aren't really closeups) than on film.

That's the difference, I think.

That's so strange...like I said I didn't think he was as good as when I saw Trey (because that had been the last time I saw the show)...but I mean...I just don't get how much he can stray from the character if he is reciting the same lines everyone else before him has. He seems bored on stage? I don't remember that, but I think I do remember him being....a little off. I just can't find the words to describe.

About Will --- I went to his site, I don't think I know him. Would I know him if I didn't know any other Broadway stuff? It doesn't appear that he's been in many films or anything. --- When was he Roger before? And...why are you guys all nutty over him? What made him better than others?

He used to double cover Roger and Mark. He regularly played the Squeegee Man.

And lots of people liked him in other stuff, so there ya go. re: Will Chase in Rent

You'd be surprised exactly how far one can stray from a character while reciting the same lines.

Very far.

Will - while I have never seen his Roger (since he never was fulltime Roger, I only saw his Steve) REALLY blew me away in Lennon... just... very passionate, beautiful voice - and he's quite focused onstage which will be welcome at the Nederlander.

Aside from Rent, will played Radames in Broadway's Aida for a good year (replacing Adam Pascal). He also was in Miss Saigon as Chris in both the tour and Broadway for a long time. I believe he ended up in the closing cast on Broadway. And of course, he was in Lennon, and was the standout, as far as the reviews were concerned.

For the record, Will and Adam are the same age--Will's about a month older, if you want to get really picky.

Age is easier to change or disguise onstage, but don't doubt the ability of the camera. Sure, the characters are meant to be young bohemians--but with the exception of Mimi, we don't know how young "young" actually is, so I don't see any real discrepancy. If Adam, Will, or anyone else for that matter can read and interpret and perform the material in a way that allows Roger to come through as ROGER, regardless of any age, then that is what really counts--not the birth certificate.

But can you tell me something about Mark that I am missing? -- I just can't remember him ...being that different than anyone else. Like I said he just seemed kind of dull. And also, I only saw him once. Has he not seemed very into it? I have been wondering that a lot lately, how they possibly keep themselves going, when they do the exact same show every night. I bet it must be hard to really stay excited each night and into it. Then again, it's f*cking Rent --- they should be excited every single second they're up on that stage. re: Will Chase in Rent re: Will Chase in Rent

see I disagree with this

I feel like Matt portrays the character of Mark differently, and I agree with his portrayal.... Mark is the loner, the outsider, the person looking in on the action... and Matt Caplan, yes when he wants to, portrays this dramatic side... but he gets all this crap about playing things for jokes... but Mark HAS to have this kind of goofy, funny side, because why else would Roger and Collins and everyone else keep him around? Mark is a funny character... Anthony does this in the movie perfectly... but I feel like because Anthony is so good, people think that Matt Caplan is just wrong and bad. Mark IS a horny twenty year old... and Matt Caplan decided to play that up, which I think is admirable, and different from the many Anthony Rapp imitators out there.

I'm not saying that Caplan isn't bored, because he does look it, although when I last saw the show in September he was pretty on.... he needs a break, but I don't think his character is bad, i think its actually pretty good.

I'm quite excited about Will (although I still miss jeremy like crazy).

and is it wrong for me to want someone to kidnap Matt so they can put Colin in as Mark?

Oh, and Justin makes me very happy.

I may have to go back after the New Year, cause I haven't gone since last january (i'm not a fan of the cary/karmine/matt combo)

when ducks grow thumbs then maybe my opinion will change.

sigh.....how is he bringing it out in Mark more than others? He does all the same moves as everyone else...how far can he stray? I know I keep asking that...but i'm seriously interested to know. Obviously, I'm aware that some people that take on a role are better or worse than others based on vocal or acting talent, but that aside, what does he do? If the only thing he is doing is bringing out one dimension of Mark more than others, than that may be a good thing...he's bringing something new and fresh to the character. But as I also said, when I saw Matt I thought he was a bit goofy. And now that you guys mention it, I remember him trying to make a joke out of something...but can't remember what it was. Maybe it's just that he's not the best actor.

The thing is, if his understudy (Colin?) is better at performing Mark than Matt is, then why don't they replace Matt! I mean why don't they realize that there is something with Matt. ---- Sorry for the 21 questions in this post, I'm just really interested in what you all think.

Generally, I just wanted to make a few comments about Mark. I think that Mark as a character has a lot of growing up to do in the story, I think he is learning how to life his life by learning from others...this is pretty evident, with him always filming people and whatnot. He's trying to figure out how to best live his life, and at times he can be immature and insecure, but he's also *trying* to grow up and be responsible. There's so much more to him, I know...I think I just really f'ing love Mark as a character because I can relate so much to him. From him loving film, to wanting to make an important piece of work, to not knowing how to become the person he wants to be....there's a lot that's special about Mark, even if he doesn't change that much throughout the story.

I think Em just put into words what exactly it was that bothered me when I saw Rent back in October. Even though it was my first experience of seeing the show, somehow I knew there was something not quite right with the idea of the Mark character humping the table during La Vie Boheme and rubbing the camera against Maureen's ass during Happy New Year. I'm glad to see that I'm not alone in disliking Matt's portrayal of Mark, and I hope that he's taking the day off when I see the show again in January.

I have a friend who LOVES Matt. Has his solo CD's, goes to all his gigs, etc. So, when Drew Lachey was playing Mark, Matt went on for a week or two during one of his vacations, and my friend and I saw the show. I was so excited to see THE Matt Caplan people had raved about as one of the best Marks ever. Granted, my friend hadn't seen him since early in his touring time, but he'd changed a LOT. He has the potential to be wonderful, I'm sure, but what I saw from him is nothing like what I'd heard he could do. He was a total disappointment.
