WARRIORS Key Art - Meh?

Not at all enticing - and makes it look more like a play than a multi-million dollar musical, but it could just be a placeholder for now.

Granted, this continues the trend of marketing/graphic designers doing the absolute least in terms of creating logos and key art that catches the eye and has curb appeal.

WARRIORS Key Art - Meh?

This is a teaser, the key art is more likely related to the token with a Warriors "W" in it seen in announcement video.

Re: WARRIORS Key Art - Meh?

There's some niche industry intrigue on this one as well. Jeffrey Seller is one of three investors (Nederlanders and Kevin McCollum being the other two) in the ad agency RPM and has had all of his shows there since it was founded (he moved Hamilton to RPM from Spotco, Sweeney was at RPM). It's interesting that he took this show back to SpotCo given that.

The drama that goes on around marketing and where producers take their shows and how close agencies get to being fired from shows is a whole aspect of this industry this board would eat UP.

Anyway, the website looks like a coding error.

You sure about Kevin and RPM? Post-pandemic, he's had every show with The Pekoe Group except for Oh Mary (which is with RPM). He's sort of singlehandedly responsible for building up Pekoe Group into a semi-legitimate agency (though I still don't think their work is very good, and the behind-the-scenes horror stories are legion).

And the "Playbill yellow" of OM and OM (Oh, Mary and Operation Mincemeat).

I think the subway token was kind of odd choice to lean into for this creative, being that subway tokens have been obsolete for 25 years, and the thing that replaced them is also obsolete now.

I think they’re trying to lean in on the gritty 1970’s NYC aspect of it all…it’s a good start in terms of teaser marketing but I’ve seen worse.

Re: WARRIORS Key Art - Meh?

Doesn't the show take place sometime in the 1970s? I personally love the stylized map and the subway token, both relics of that era.

I love it too J, it's so funny people who haven't seen the movie or read the novel and clearly know nothing about it complaining about subway tokens. They don't even know what century it takes place in apparently?

The key art and album are fantastic, and I have no doubt the show will be too considering the talent involved including some recent casting that is incredibly exciting.

Re: WARRIORS Key Art - Meh?

I know the movie takes place in the 70s, but I don't remember anything on the concept album that specifically places it in that time. My impression is that they made a deliberate choice to not tie it to a specific time period given the show (like the movie) exists in a sort of fictionalized abstract version of New York.

That’s actually a pretty accurate description from when I first heard the concept album. That being said, I don’t know how this show’s gonna work in such a large Broadway space such as the Lunt-Fontanne. I mean just listening to the album, it does indeed have this epic scale of a fictionalized abstract version of New York with so many musical genres to prove it, but it’s also one that also feels more intimate and character-driven. Joe Weinberg, recently made a good point about this in a recent video he posted about one of the show’s directors Jenny Koons https://www.tiktok.com/t/ZP8tBRgGy/

As a native New Yorker kid who would ride the various subway lines to the last stop for adventure, I love the key art. I spent countless hours pouring over that 1972 Vignelli subway map. It is a work of art.

While I like the concept, I find it to be almost understated considering the actual material.

It really is, Melissa. I hope they make a window card of it, I have a feeling Warriors merch is going to be plentiful considering Lin's enormous website of anything you could ever think of to own is there.

100% on McCollum. Mrs.doubtfure was at RPM. Since that, you are correct that his work has been with Pecoe Group. I’m sure there’s a story there.
