War Horse * I almost fell asleep. I think I might have fallen asleep.

Heathers **** Adored it. While it might have been a little awkward since I saw it with a parent (Dead Girl Walking...), I really, truly loved it. (Carrie Hope Fletcher and Jodie Steele).

The Mousetrap *** While I really liked it, the play dragged at points. But I was invested and am excited for the New York run!

The Play That Goes Wrong ***** For some reason this production made me laugh harder than the production in New York? Weird. HILARIOUS. One of my favorite plays.

Everybody's Talking About Jaime **** I thought there were some points that dragged, but I was hooked from "And You Don't Even Know It". Wonderful.

I also hated War Horse, I think I left at intermission. But Jaime, dragged and dragged, it was dreadful to me.

I felt so bad because I hardly ever doze off during a show, but I really think I did during that one. The puppetry was beautiful, but I think the theatre was warm, I had a late night before seeing it...I don't intend on seeing it again if it comes anywhere near me

I can't imagine not enjoying plays lol. I'd give 5 stars to Piano Lesson, Salesman, Leopoldstadt, Topdog, and Ohio State Murders.

Phantom4ever said: "Aladdin** The experience was like trying to watch a Broadway show in a daycare center. Other than Friend Like Me, the entire show was not memorable either.

Beetlejuice**a cherished childhood memory that didn't translate well to the stage.

The Book of Mormon**** a vicious satire of white people, Christianity, and American exceptionalism

Chicago**** the sexiest show on Broadway

Hadestown** really wanted to like it but it just wasn't memorable. I've been told I have to give it a second try.

Hamilton***** I got in on the ground floor with this one and now it seems more dated than shows decades older.

Into the Woods*** very entertaining

The Lion King* Does Cameron Mackintosh produce this show, because it seems like all they do is cut stuff from it.

Moulin Rouge** Probably the worst audience I've ever seen. Would never see this show again unless they taped everybody's mouth shut on the way in and used yondr pouches.

The Phantom of the Opera****** Harold Prince and Maria Bjornson perfect masterpiece, and as the NY Times review said, it is their love letter to theater. Thrilled I get to see it 8 final times.

Wicked** I always feel like I have to be 12 to enjoy this show

Hadestown: Hated it on Broadway. Zero clue why people liked it except for a song here or there. Saw the tour and fell in love with it.

Phantom: I saw it 20 years ago and it felt dated then. Why not update the designs and props.

Hamilton: Long.

I was able to see 7 shows this year. Only repeat show from previous years is Hadestown, otherwise, everything was brand new for me:

The Piano Lesson : **** (4) - some moments were great, and some I lost focus.

The Collaboration : ***** (5) - if you want a great performance, this is the play for you. Those two are showing their acting range which was amazing to see.

Death of a Salesman : * (1) - left at intermission. I’ve never been so bored in my life.

Harry Potter : **** (4) - minus one star because it was long. That’s my only complaint.

Into the Woods : ***** (5) - perfection

Beetlejuice : *** (3) - friend’s choice otherwise I probably wouldn’t have seen this. I didn’t hate it, but didn’t love it. I liked the set a lot.

Hadestown : ***** (5) - I’ve lost count on how many times I’ve seen this one. Can’t get enough.

———

Previous years:

Aladdin : *** (3) - this is my introduce friends to Broadway show.

Book of Mormon : * (1) - hated it, but my friends loved it. It just wasn’t for me.

Chicago : * (1) - very boring.

Hamilton : **** (4) - it was enjoyable. I’d like to see again but ticket prices are out of budget right now.

Lion King : **** (4) - really fun

Wicked : *** (3) - I had a headache going in which made me not able to focus. I’ll have to try this one again next year.

You'll most likely be getting your wish whenever the new Phantom opens. It'll be all new (cheap) design with projections and videos most likely that I'm sure you'll love.

By the way, Phantom is designed in the style of 19th century opera, so it is supposed to feel classic and old school. Don't worry though if you don't like it--- you'll NEVER see anything like it again on Broadway.  Enjoy your projections!  : )

Into the Woods, Encores *****

Downstate *****

Kimberly Akimbo Off Broadway & Broadway ****

Company ****

Funny Girl performances not production: Beanie **, Julie ***, Lea ***** and I’m not a big Lea fan.

Chess (Entertainment Community Fund concert) *** I’m a huge fan of the score, my first time seeing/ hearing it live. Tough score, but a few of the leads had problems with the songs including not being able to sing the notes.

Parade, Encores ****

The Music Man **** I am not a MM fan but really enjoyed this production

Cost of Living ****

Space Dogs *

Moulin Rouge **

Prayer for the French Republic ****

Black No More **

Paradise Square **

Come From Away **** originally saw when it first opened on Broadway , liked it but really enjoyed when I saw it again this year.

How I Learned to Drive ***

A Strange Loop ****

POTUS ****

Girl from the North Country **

Harmony **

Fat Ham ****

Bedwetter **

SUFFS ***

soft ****

Mr. Saturday Night ***

The Kite Runner ****

Topdog Underdog **

Piano Lesson ***

Death of a Salesman ****

Leopoldstadt ****

Merrily We Roll Along ****

Between Riverside and Crazy ****

Collaboration **

Butcher Boy *

1776 *

Some Like It Hot *** incredibly talented cast. Wanted to enjoy this more. Songs sounded same and mostly same tempo/energy. Great dancing but over choreographed.

Macbeth * Broadway

Thank you to theater friends and discounted theater options (social media, rush, lottery, papering services, TDF, friend’s’ connection to theater) for allowing me to see so many shows. My budget only allowed me to splurge on a few shows, so I am appreciative of seeing so many others for free or deeply discounted.

OMG you really drink every last drop of this juicy big apple that NYC is! I have big respect for you! But why didn't you see KPOP!? Why didn't anyone go to KPOP? What's wrong with the world?!

Anyway, I also decided Some Like It Hot gets only * it was painful just like Kimberly Akimbo, Moulin Rouge, Hamilton and 1776. Just boring.

Just saw this-well, not every type of art is for every person. No one is required to enjoy a play, or a musical. There's nothing wrong with them if they prefer musicals, or if someone prefers plays over musicals. It's personal preference :) Respect it, move on :)

You know you're totally right, I think since most of the people on this board were bullied in high school for either being gay or an outcast or maybe not very good looking, I feel it's in them unfortunately to bully others, in this case, anyone who disagrees with them or if they decide they can't keep up with musicals AND plays like me, we get bullied. It's all good though, that's why I reacted nicely to that post in the past. But it's really about them, not about me. I just decided I enjoy musicals much more and of course, time and money are an issue for some of us. I was very tempted to go to Ain't no mo, but I just can't see every play and musical in town, I'll never have a life if I did. So I try to see most musicals and yet, I see much more theater and support more live theater than most people in the world.

From my most recent trip in November -

Some Like It Hot *** - LIKED it, but wasn't over the moon about it.

Into the Woods ***** - Absolutely EXEMPLARY theatre.

Funny Girl (Lea Michele) ***** - She is SO good that she makes you not even realize how bad some of the other production elements are.

& Juliet **** - I had an absolute blast.

In the car, I listen to Sirius XM on Broadway.  When anything from "Matilda" comes on, I switch the channel.  It is torture to my ears.

"Noel [Coward] and I were in Paris once. Adjoining rooms, of course. One night, I felt mischievous, so I knocked on Noel's door, and he asked, 'Who is it?' I lowered my voice and said 'Hotel detective. Have you got a gentleman in your room?' He answered, 'Just a minute, I'll ask him.'" (Beatrice Lillie)

I genuinely don’t understand the the response to Kimberly Akimbo. It’s a sweet kettle musical but it’s not best musical material. It all sounds the same and how did adding music to the play add anything to it dramatically? As others have said around Tony time, I don’t see the mass appeal of it without Clark and how touring audiences would respond. Whereas Some Like it Hot is getting bashed for being transphobic, but actually had an uplifting message and would seem to appeal to audiences that love a splashy musical. There is room for both, but what the creatives did with Some Like it Hot’s source material versus adding music to a play and making every song sound the same but being applauded for being “sweet” I truly find baffling.

Phillytheatreguy10 I honestly found both KA and SLIH both totally awful. But SLIH was slightly better. At least it had nice music and dance.

Adding woke elements to a production just for the sake of adding them diminishes rather than enhances. Just as adding wild cards to poker doesn't help the game.

If Some Like It Hot is in the scope of your comment, I strongly disagree. That genre of show in general isn't my cup of tea, but it was made much more interesting by its updated treatment of Jerry/Daphne.

Two audience members at NY NY tonight were disgusting. This girl and her mother maybe, talking the entire show and texting. She was also wearing a crop top, I don't think that's theater attire in my point of view. She got up during ACT 1 to go to the bathroom and I was thinking "this girl has never been to a Broadway show", nothing wrong with going to the bathroom, but it didn't seem to be an emergency, and everyone on her row had to get up and she was maybe 23yo, so not like she was older and maybe had a situation.

Regarding the show, it was very smart that they used songs from other Kander and Ebb shows, such as The Rink, and Flora. The acting and the feeling weren't really there from the entire cast. But some of the cast was superb, especially some supporting characters such as the role played by Emily Sinner, John Clay and Clyde Alves. The new version was smart, had a few great Broadway moments. It's a nice love letter to NYC and to Kander and Ebb!

Regarding Bad Cinderella, which is the other show I have seen this year, I don't have many positive things to say, so I won't say anything at all. Just a woke Cinderella, and woke is getting old.

I go to NYC for a show at least once a month. So far, I have a ticket for :

-New York New York (4.8.23 matinee) **** - Overall enjoyed it. Anna Uzele singing But The World Goes Round and title song New York, New York were absolutely perfection and worth the price of admission alone

-Grey House (May and June)

-Shucked (August and October)

-The Cottage (September)

-Merrily We Roll Along (November)

I still need to purchase for Once Upon a One More Time, Sweeney Todd, The Mousetrap, and a return to Wicked.

As the year goes on, I’ll add in my thoughts and ratings!
