Sound of Music Presale on Amex

I can never figure out where Broadway audiences stand with The Sound of Music. It's first and only prior revival was almost 30 years ago. No one ever seems to be clamoring for it. And the movie is still so ubiquitous that I think the sort of people who really want to experience The Sound of Music won't want to have to pay Broadway prices to do so, whereas the sort of people who love Broadway and appreciate the unique experience of live theater aren't so crazy about the show.

For the record, I like the material, I like the show (I think the movie is better, but it's a seperate medium and trying to do the film onstage doesn't work). But I think I'm out of step with the general taste on this one. I'm just wondering what sort of success should be expected here. Or am I just wrong, and there is indeed a large audience for it?

I am pretty much with you, schubox, except my wife wants to see it. I have found it a little too cloying in the past but have never seen a major production. I probably was premature in buying tickets during the Amex presale (sitting center loge, paid $145.50 per ticket) but my guess was that prices for previews won’t ever get that cheap.

I am looking forward to viewing the musical with fresh eyes. Maybe I will be underwhelmed again but my family will be happy to see the show. And Lincoln Center is always a nice place to go during a visit to New York City.

To the OP’s point, I think most theatergoers have seen a local production or a touring version of The Sound of Music at some point in their lives - in addition to the film. That probably has limited any clamor for Broadway revivals. When I first heard about the revival, I was a bit underwhelmed too. For a show with so many familiar songs, I don’t think it’s regarded as a great musical - even if many love the movie.

As for popular demand, I guess we’ll find out - especially without a celebrity as Maria.
