It is a horrible idea to do research by asking random message board posters for facts. Horrible. I can't emphasize that enough. How on earth are you going to cite the facts? To "Plum" or "SticktoPriest" over at BWW? What will your teacher think? As a general rule, just don't use the Internet for research unless you are using an official encyclopedia or a database like Lexis or Proquest. And no, Wikipedia doesn't count.

I can, as a superior alternative, recommend Stephen Sondheim: A Life, by Meryle Secrest, which has plenty of information on his childhood.

Check out Sondheim.com for a lot of info on the shows (not so much biographical info though). Definitely read the Seacrest bio and "Sondheim and Company" by Craig Zadan for info on his early and later life.

He was mentored as a teenager and beyond by his neighbor the legendary Oscar Hammerstein II (Showboat, all of the Rodgers and Hammerstein shows). Read as much as you can about that relationship which explains much about how Sondheim became Sondheim.

The random facts was for my knowlage and for amusements, not for the paper, just to let you know. I know not to site people for the information I put into an essay. I just want to know more.

Also suggest "Art Isn't Easy: The Theater of Stephen Sondheim" by Joanne Gordon." Excellent book with analysis of his lyrics.
