Just the thought of Sutton Foster as Dorothy Brock has me absolutely twitching. I love 42ND STREET and was literally talking to someone two days ago about how it needs to be revived.

I went to see Fallen Angels today and arrived a bit early so walked down 42nd looking for a quick lunch. That street between 7th and 8th is so depressing. It felt like 50% of the storefronts were still vacant. So when I saw this thread, I thought that maybe Rudin was going to help revitalize that strip. Oh well. My mistake. Thankfully I found Schnippers.

I feel like this show won’t look anything like previous productions. A show this size would cost too much to mount in today’s climate. The sets are huge and the cast is even bigger. All the costumes and staff… 42nd St is not a cheap show to produce. Although with a star or two they could probably get enough backing.

Rudin would be able to get the backing, but I agree that it would have to be scaled way back from the previous revival to have any chance of recouping. That one ran for almost four years and failed to recoup, and that was at a time when a show that size could keep running pre-recoupment on weeks that were barely clearing 50% capacity. There's no way for a show that size to run on less than 80% capacity with a crazy high average ticket price to be able to succeed

I've heard this is going to have a brand new script. There are exactly two great jokes in the existing one (Julian being too ambitious in his big solo, and having one of his tenors step in for him to sing the climactic high note; and Anytime Annie's name implying she's a slut, only to later reveal she got it because she'll help anybody, any time). I hope they keep those, but I've got no attachment to the rest of it.
Also: I saw a fantastic high school production a few years ago that changed nothing but a few pronouns, and made Julian Marsh into Julia Marsh. They played the whole show with the subtext that Julia, a semi-out lesbian director in the 1930s Dietrich fashion, recognizes that Peggy is brilliant, but that she's also queer, and made them more of a kindred spirits thing than "the older director picks up the young actress." It made the ending when Peggy goes with Julian instead of her age-appropriate colleagues play in a very tender way.

Do you mean he is making West 42nd Street look better with new/updated theaters, or he is remounting a revised production of the Broadway musical called "42nd Street"?

The latter. Revival of the Broadway musical "42nd Street," rumored to have a new book (potentially by Ethan Coen) and at one point ALSO rumored to be a star vehicle for Sabrina Carpenter.

Just "out of hand", w/o knowing who's cast as Julian and Peggy, or what ages will be assigned for each character?
I would have thought that before any mention of Julian kissing Peggy, there would have been at least one post in protest that Rudin is not only still working on Broadway, but unabashedly has plans for his future there.

to those who have said Sabrina Carpenter I just heard that’s no longer the case, they’re casting a complete unknown to play Sawyer. However, I’ve heard Oscar Isaac is attached to play Julian. It’s gonna take the St. James next spring

To be honest, I wouldn't be surprised if somebody like Jerry Zaks or Jack O'Brien ends up doing it.
