I was looking on the "Upcoming Releases" section and noticed this recording. I know it's not a new show, but I was wondering what you all thought of the show? It's billed as a "rock musical" - but is it? Is it suppose to be funny or what?

Also, I remember seeing something about this musical that was suppose to open at New World Stages and it had a jesus/religious theme to it too. I can't think of the name of it, but I saw a clip of it on youtube and I thought it sounded alright. Anyone know?

Hi Rentboy,

I think you're talking about the Rock Musical "Hero". From my understanding of the recording, it's suppose to be a modern day Jesus story or something along those lines?

I don't know if It's the same show but I have an old mc recording of Salvation a rock musical of Peter Link, a sort of Godspell with a banal rock score...the musical was a forgotten off bw show of 1969...The songs tells about religion, sex, drugs and Jesus...the logo is a sort of ellettric cross...I know that is avaible now alsdo on cd, but is not a masterprice, is a mix of Hair and Godspell but withhout a big score unfurtunatelly...

Salvation is decent. Some real clunkers in the score, but there are a few keepers. "Let's Get Lost In Now" is one of my favorites. I bought the cd when I was in high school for 10 bucks and put it in from time to time. Worth having, especially if you're a collector. I believe Bette Middler was in it.. but don't quote me on it.

No, I know what Hero is and I would not purchase that. If you look on Broadway World's upcoming releases, you'll see it. It has the electric cross and whatnot. I still wish I knew what show was playing at New World Stages, it sounded good, but then I never heard anything about it.

Bette Midler was in SALVATION, although not in the original cast. She replaced Marta Heflin. If I remember correctly, the score contains Ronnie Dyson singing "If You Let Me Make Love To You" which actually hit the charts.

"You got the same dress I got?" "Yes.""You got the same wig I got?" "Yes." THEN SHUT UP!

What year did this show play and was it off-broadway? How many performances did it run? I couldn't find it on ibdb or the off-bway database. Thanks!

Salvation:
Off Broadway 1969 run: 239.
Music;Lyrics and Book:Peter Link & C.C. Courteney.
Cast: Yolande Bavan; Peter Link; Martha Elfin; Joe Morton; Boni Enten; C.C. Corteney; Annie Rachel; Chapman Roberts…
The same authors made also an ideal sequel of this show called “Earl Of Ruston” (1971) who was a flop (only 5 performances) . Link composed also the score for “King Of Heart” another big Broadway flop…
The plot of Salvation is not very clear: was the classic off tribe musical show of the ’60-’70 with a group of young and trasgressive people who talk about love, religion, Jesus, sex, drugs and rock’n’roll….Hair mix with Godspell and a touch of Let My People Come and Oh Calcutta… The score is ’60 rock and pop mix with gospel, country…It’s interesting the vocal and lyrics improvisation of the cast in some parts of the songs. The score included “If You Let Me make Love Tthen Why Can’t I Touch You”…In my recording is performed by the entire company.

I believe Link also did a musical Lysistrata. I may have seen it as I honestly cannot remember but the name stays with me

I remeber seeing Salvation & used to have the LP

I picked up this CD a long time ago. As someone who loves nothing more than a sixties off-Broadway rock musical, I have to say that I found "Salvation" one of the less interesting. Peter Link also wrote "King Of Hearts", which I am not familiar with but has its admirers.

"Salvation" is really a grunged out, low-rent "Godspell" without the good music. A couple of the songs are sort of catchy, but there's quite a bit of off-key singing and bad guitar playing, and it sounds very dated (and not in a good way). A curiosity, if you're into that "Your Own Thing"-era off-Broadway rock shows. It probably played better onstage than it recorded, since I know there were some other productions. I didn't see it - I wasn't around just yet.

Just picked up this CD, and indeed it is an interesting Hair- Godspell style musical. "Let The Moment Slip By" is beautiful.

[title of show] on Broadway. it's time. believe.

I have it to and think it is unlistenable (this coming from someone who loves Bring Back Birdie though).
