According to an article in Variety, one of the producers says that the songs are working but that some of the phrasing may be changed. So, I hope they don't mess with the courtroom song since it's just about the best one, and it has been well received in the reviews and by the audience.

What is wrong with people? Some people are thinking Laura is an actual competitor against Christin Ebersole? Puh-lease. Do you think this is an actual competitor against shows as new and, as innovative as Spring Awakening or Grey Gardens?

I'm not saying that Legally Blonde will win Best Musical, but I think it's going to get a nomination.

As far as Mary Poppins goes, I'll just say that if Disney had produced Legally Blonde I wouldn't expect it to get a Best Musical nom. There aren't a lot of generalizations that can be made about the Tonys, but they sure hate Disney (other than when Julie Taymor is directing.) I was astonished that "Aida" didn't get nominated for Best musical in 2000, especially considering what a weak roster there was that year.

Yeah, that musical segment from James Joyce's "The Dead" sure made for thrilling television.

I got this screen name when I liked Wicked. Wicked has nothing to do with what I was talking about.

It's odd that a show that won best score didn't even get a nomination for best musical. I really do not want Mary Poppins to get a nomination. You know what happens when Disney musicals get nominated.

"Debra Monk- I don't know if her role is big enough but isn't her name above the title?"

I haven't seen Curtains so I can't comment on how large her role is but even if her name is above the title is does not automatically mean she is leading. It just means she is a star for example, Joel Grey in Chicago. He is well-known but his role was supporting.

Debra really has a supporting role, but they might try and push her for leading.

Well Becoz_i_knew_you21, the thing is the Tonys aren't always about artistic merit. I mean The Lion King won best musical for heaven sakes, and Millie won over Urinetown (also personally I thought Urinetown was kind of stupid but maybe I just saw a bad regional production of it.)

And don't get me started on Jersey "Jukebox Musical" Boys. I mean it’s not a bad show, but Best Musical? I guess I’ll have to see the others show if they tour near me.

"It's odd that a show that won best score didn't even get a nomination for best musical."

It was a deliberate and malicious snub against Disney on the part of the Tony nominating committee. These were the nominees for 2000:

Contact" (The score consisted of recorded oldies)
"James Joyce's The Dead" (Really just a play with some Irish songs tossed in)
"Swing!"
"The Wild Party"

As far as the musical segments went the Tony broadcast was atrocious that year. If anything, it seemed like an infomercial designed to convince viewers that musical theater was boring, pretentious and not worth bothering with.

I knew that. Read my posts before saying I don't get things about the Tony's. Thats is why I was saying I wouldn't like Mary Poppins to get nominated because a lot of Tony voters are involved in promoting tours for these type of shows. These promoters think if it wins best musical it will help sell the show. For example, The Lion King won over Ragtime which is a travesty.

Becoz, you are entitled to your opinion. I've seen both Ragtime and Lion King many times, and I think in this case the Tony voters got it right. Ragtime had the best book and score for 1998, and Lion King was the best musical. After all these years it's easy to forget how revolutionary and exciting Julie Taymor's approach to this material was. And while commercial success doesn't necessarily equal creative merit, it's worth noting that the original Broadway mounting, two national tours and 8 worldwide productions of Lion King are still going strong.

I think this might be another year where the best musical winner doesn't end up being the show that wins for best book or best score.

Pardon me for popping back in 2 days late, but I was away for the weekend.

I just want to say that I think the Tony Nominating Committee will specifically leave LEGALLY BLONDE out of the Best Musical category, along with MARY POPPINS. The Nominating Committee knows that if they nominate either of these shows for Best Musical, then they will likely win, because the road voters will want them to make money at their theatres.

As for Best Choreography, I'm pretty certain (at this point at least) that Bill T. Jones has this category tied up with his innovative, completely out of the ordinary choreography for SPRING AWAKENING.

I think Wanna Be is right too. If either Legally Blonde or Mary Poppins get a Best Musical nod, then it's mot likely that either would win...God save us all!

Difference with the Bernadette v. Marissa case is that a lot of people were divided about Peters' Rose, some people thought it was her best performance to date, others thought it was her worst. With Christine Ebersole, people (and by people I mean Brantley) are saying that hers might be the best performance in a musical...ever!
I saw Ebersole on Friday and Chenoweth today. I think both deserve the nomination and while I thought Ebersole was incredibly brilliant in Grey Gardens I don't think she should be the absolute winner. I'm still crossing my fingers for Ms.Murphy.
