As all of you know already, Avenue Q is currently playing in Las Vegas. I have recently read an article where it says two songs (There is life outside your apartment, I wish I could go back to college) were removed to make the musical shorter. I was wondering, would you switch any other songs from the show to have any of these two back on? I love all the songs on the cd, but I would switch I'm Not Wearing Underwear Today with I Wish I could go back to College.
Oh, and I will be back with more Avenue Q questions, and stuff!! I am currently falling in love with the cd (got it for my birthday!)
I agree with the above. I'm not too crazy about "My Girlfriend, Who Lives In Canada"; I don't think it adds that much to the show. I personally think "I'm Not Wearing Underwear Today" is worthwhile, but only for Christmas Eve shouting "GET A JOB!" Hilarious!
The two shortest songs of the show are probably I'M NOT WEARING UNDERWEAR TODAY and MY GIRLFRIEND WHO LIVES IN CANADA. Thos two combined equal the size of THERE IS LIFE OUTSIDE YOUR APARTMENT.
The smallest stream is a valent river. It will drown me if it can.
Good point. They could probably cut a verse or so from some of the longer songs ("Everyone's A Little Bit Racist," "The Internet Is For Porn") without losing too much.
My Girlfriend Who Lives in Canada sets up one of the funniest (and most uncomfortable) moments I have ever experienced in a theater. I would never cut that song.
I dont get how cutting Im Not Wearing Underwear Today could make any difference.... Plus its really Brian's only chance to shine... that would be like cutting The More You Ruv Someone.
Mix Tape could definitely afford to be cut down a bit, and I Wish I Could Go Back to College would not be one of my first choices for cuts. Its barely a 2 minute song, and really brings the two plots together nicely.
I think I would have to see the production to see how things are going to flow without the songs keeping them together. Without an intermission, it is logical to cut There is Life Outside Your Apartment just because it brings you into Act Two. Any idea how Princeton meets up with Lucy if this song isnt in it?
Glad you are enjoying Q =) Go see it before Ann leaves!
That's too bad that I wish I could go back to college was cut. It's one of my favorite songs in the show. I'd rather see that one than "There is Life Outside Your Apartment." Regarless of plot issues...it's just such a great song.
"I would cut Fantasies Come True " Ahhhhh thats my favorite song!!
"I never had theatre producers run after me. Some people want to make more Broadway shows out of movies. But Elliot and I aren't going to do Batman: The Musical." - Julie Taymor 1999
But if I had to choose two, I would lovingly leave out Life Outside Your Appartment and I'm not wearing underwear today. Life outside your appartment I like alot, but i don't love it. And "underwear" I don't realy care about. It's funny, but that's about it.
To cut out "College" is a real mistake. It probably has my favorite line in the show, "We could be sitting in the computer lab, four am before the final paper is due. Cursing the world that we didn't start sooner but seeing the rest of the class there to." I absolutely love this song.
And the even thought of cutting out "Fantasies" makes me wince. I absolutely, 100% love this song.
Anyway, I may be seeing the new cut in two weeks, so I'll report back then.
I think "I'm not Wearing Underwear Today" should be cut out instead of "I wish I could go back to college". It doesn't really do much for the plot and it just seems like its a transitional device to set up for "Special."
I'd cut "Schadenfreude". I have nothing against the song at all, but I believe it has the least plot development out of all the songs in the show. Some may argue the same of "Racist", but that song becomes an important plot point concerning why Kate quits her job.
Brian's "I'm Not Wearing Underwear Today" is important because it shows us that his dreams of being a "big comedian on late night tv" are pretty far-fetched and it also serves as a segueway for a scene change.
The main thing I'm curious to see is how the cut of "Life Outside Your Apartment" works in the shorter version of the show because that song basically sets up the Act 2 love triangle of Princeton with Kate and Lucy.
I recently saw the show in Vegas (Jan 12th I think) It had BOTH of those songs in it...so I don't know if they cut them and put them back but they are there.
