Possible OH, MARY casting thoughts

My friend and I were talking about the potential for OH MARY casting. It seems like there is endless potential. I'm curious how long they could keep it running.

Is there any chance we see: Dan Levy, or Tina Fey or Amy Poehler, or Jennifer Coolidge (who personally I'd love in it), or Lisa Kudrow.

We really missed out, because I think Joan Rivers or Robin Williams would have been great in this role.

Levy would be the most likely. I don’t see the others doing it since they are all busy with other things. Coolidge also strikes me more as a Louise.

Rivers and Williams, retroactively, I fear would have been horrible choices. Rivers wasn’t exactly an actress. She seldom played characters that weren’t herself. Williams, I think, would have needed to be reined in A LOT since he was prone to improvisation and tangents and, while the show has some moments, he could run the risk of running the whole show off the rails.

This is one of those special shows where the character actors we all know and love get to take center stage and blow the house down in a Broadway debut. What other play on earth would’ve caused Maya Rudolph to be the SIXTH successor in the lead role.

Amy Poehler has mentioned on her podcast that the 8 performances a week grind for several months is something not in her wheelhouse anymore. She loves the show and has supported friends who’ve been in the play but she’s not up to it herself. Same reason Amy Sedaris declined doing it.

I personally would watch Lisa Rinna play Mary happily

I still think a Megan Mullaly/Nick Offerman duo cast is the dreamiest of dreams

She'd never do it but RuPaul would be a riot

Kristin is interesting...

Megan Mullaly/Nick Offerman is incredible.

Someone on here once said a filmed version with Ms. Piggy as Mary and the rest of the cast humans: perfection.

Amy Poehler/Tina Fey and/or Amy Sedaris in rep, maybe?

My personal pick: Hedda Lettuce.

Re: Possible OH, MARY casting thoughts

I will never stop saying I want Gerard Way to play Mary, maybe with the entirety of the band with some of the 'Long Live The Black Parade' cast thrown in there.

Not specifically Mary related, but I reeeeeeeeeally want to see Charlotte Kelso on Broadway. I saw her as Sylvia on the 'Long Live' tour in Atlanta and her voice is genuinely one of the best i've ever heard.

Re: Possible OH, MARY casting thoughts

Personally, I’d love to see Dratch take over for a stint. Considering Rocky Horror will be over by next February, and Oh Mary just extended to July, she could continue to really ride the momentum. Even if not Mary, she would definitely work as Louise.

I honestly also would love Michael Urie to come back and have a crack at both Mary and Abe - maybe do a rotating cast like they did with THE LITTLE FOXES. Maybe opposite someone like Jak Malone

Dratch would really be great. She'd be a great Louise, sure, but it would be really wonderful for her to finally get a lead role like that, which I don't believe she's ever really had in her career.

Re: Possible OH, MARY casting thoughts

Lots of good suggestions here. Kristin Chenoweth feels more like a Louise than Mary to me.

Hargitay would be stellar, and I hope she does more theater in general.

Sherie Rene Scott is my top choice in the category of people who probably aren't famous enough to get the gig.

Samantha Morton is someone who could fit the Betty Gilpin mode of straddling between unhinged comedy and playing it deadly serious.

My blue-sky wishes would be Da'Vine Joy Randolph, Parker Posey or Amanda Seyfried.

Wait for that one day we can bite free and get back out there in space where we belong, sail back over water, over skies, into space, the hook finally out of our mouths and we wander back out there in space spawning to other planets never to return hurrah to earth and we'll look back and can't even see these lives here anymore. Only the taste of blood to remind us we ever existed. The earth is small. We're gone. We're dead. We're safe." -John Guare, Landscape of the Body

She initially started her career in comedy so this whole dramatic career success with LAW & ORDER: SVU still baffles her today. She wants to pursue comedy work again so this is definitely something she’d totally consider now.
