Per a video on the Public's IG, Eustis will be retiring from his role as artistic director when his current contract ends at the end of July in two years. A pretty significant change to the nonprofit theater landscape.

What an exceptional career he's had. He will have spent 23 years at the Public.
I have a feeling Saheem Ali ends up succeeding him.

Ali certainly seems like he's being groomed to take over and has institutional knowledge, which is a plus, but I find him to be a rather uninteresting choice with an incredibly spotty artistic record.
(I was also surprised, when I was at the Public on Monday, to find that they are renovating the lobby again).

"Retiring" is a much less sensational term than "stepping down".

It’s well past time. He’s had a wonderful career turning around both Trinity Rep and the Public, but it’s time for some fresh blood. I agree that Saheem Ali seems both the obvious choice to succeed him, and also perhaps the wrong one. The Public needs someone with genuinely new eyes to see it for what it can be.

I loved Eustis’ time at The Public. Plenty of misses but a lot of magic. He’s always seemed like one of the most genuinely enthusiastic & dedicated artistic directors to me.
and please god ANYONE but Saheem Ali to succeed him. I have not enjoyed any of his work. Maybe he’d fare better as a curator than he does as a director himself but nothing about him excites me.

The Public needs a good hard shake up from top to bottom and ALL NEW blood to reinvigorate the place.

Artistic directorships in general should turn over more frequently than they currently do. This is a problem especially in regional theatre but also in the NYC nonprofit world. We should be moving away from these quarter-century-plus tenures and from creating an environment where the individual essentially becomes the institution.

Hell of a run and I think he's done a lot of good for the Public and for the industry as a whole.
Saheem Ali indeed seems like the natural internal successor, but I bet they'll do their due diligence and look at outside candidates as well. Saheem also might not want to - being a director for hire could be more appealing to him.
Former Public staffmembers Shanta Thake (Chief Artistic Officer at Lincoln Center) and Maria Manuela Goyanes (currently LCT3, previously Woolly Mammoth) could also be contenders and may have more experience curating seasons and wooing donors. Or maybe it becomes a multi-person leadership braintrust like at the RSC and Soho Rep, instead of one singular individual.
