The North American Tour will shutter, “following its August 15, 2027, performance.”

“The closure will allow the Tony-winning creative team, including director Julie Taymor, to reimagine elements of the production while maintaining the scale and emotional power that have defined The Lion King for decades. The newly configured production will launch with cities, dates, and casting to be announced at a later time.”

The current tour was already reconfigured/downsized back in 2017. Wonder how much more downsized this new tour will be?

The tour still uses 17 trucks and employs over 130 traveling people. I'm amazed that it's lasted this long at this scale. Hopefully they find a way to keep the integrity of the staging and design unlike Beauty and the Beast.

I haven’t seen the tour since 2007, although I’ve had plenty of opportunities in multiple cities over the past couple of decades. If this scale back allows it to fit into smaller markets and brings the arts to more people, I think it’s fantastic. Anyone who’s wanted the bigger theatrical experience has likely had multiple chances and now more people and emerging young artists can enjoy the magic of the live arts. I believe I’ve read the current tour takes four days to load in, so I hope Lion King continues successfully in its new form with new markets unlocked.

Smaller cast & orchestra I'd assume.

A Chorus Line revival played its final Broadway performance on August 17, 2008. The tour played its final performance on August 21, 2011. A new non-equity tour started in October 2012 played its final performance on March 23, 2013. Another non-equity tour launched on January 20, 2018. The tour ended its US run in Kansas City and then toured throughout Japan August & September 2018.

I have a hard time believing Julie Taymor will let them ruin the show in any way, she’s protective of her baby/money maker.

Interested to see what they end up doing. I have a soft spot for TLK and coming back to NY next year for the 30th anniversary!

the sarcastic post about how it will be comparable to the current beauty and the beast tour abomination is spot on

the producers will still charge the same ticket prices

while paying the workers the wages they used to earn on national tours in 1998

this is all so that the rich can get richer
