I was planning on going to New York for my 16th Birthday and spending the weekend and seeing a show or two, but once my Dad saw some hotel prices he said he didn't think we could. Does anyone know any good but semi-cheap hotels around the theatre district? I'm going the weekend before July 4th if that matters?
Will you be needing one bed or two? If you need two, then bidding on Priceline won't work for you.
If you don't want to stay in Manhattan, you can try hotels in Long Island City or in Brooklyn or Jersey City. But if you do this, you won't be able to go back to your hotel for change of clothing, rest, etc.
You can try looking on hotwire.com to see the rates for the dates you plan on being here. That will give you an idea as to whether that weekend is particularly expensive or not. Hotel room rates fluctuate. Since you haven't said when you are going to be here, who knows whether $340 is actually reasonable or not.
You can always try the Pod Hotel... if I were to compare the rooms to anything, it would be cruise ship lodgings.. Most rooms have one bed, but they DO have rooms with two beds (bunk style generally) and you can save more if you were willing to stay on a floor that has communal, dorm style bathrooms..
There are some cheaper hotels if you venture further from the theatre district. I have never stayed here, but The Gershwin Hotel had pretty good reviews. I got a room during Tony week for $129 per night for two standard twin beds and private bathroom on a website called EasytoBook. The hotel is located 7 E27th Street. Again this will be my first time, so other posters might know it better. There were some others in the same area (33-27sts) that had good prices but they were shared baths.
Try the Apple Core Hotels. Google them-5 locations in midtown-all clean and reasonable.
The Hotel Carter is a steal too. Just bring a box cutter.
"The sexual energy between the mother and son really concerns me!"-random woman behind me at Next to Normal
"I want to meet him after and bang him!"-random woman who exposed her breasts at Rock of Ages, referring to James Carpinello
I think it ultimately depends on what you can live with. My partner and I are travelling from Sydney and looked for a reasonably priced hotel but in the end went with nicer hotels at a higher price as lots and lots of reviews for the cheaper ones were complaining of either bad service or being unclean. July is peak time but I think you could do better than what you found pricewise. Best of luck -hope you find something and get to visit.
The last few times I've gone to NYC I have stayed at The Pod, and I really enjoyed the stay. The rooms are clean, and as you can guess from the name VERY "Apple" esque. Yes the rooms (we've always gotten the bunk bed rooms) are a bit small, but we generally didn't spend too much time in the room.
Rant, Wickud, Rant, Wickud, Rant! We're not gonna pay Rant! 'Cause everythink is Wickud!

lakezurich will be played by Paul Groves in the BWW musical
the Gershwin is all-sold out for those dates except for dormitory rooms
the Pod Hotel has available rooms for the bunk pod, but you'll have a shared bath which I'm not sure your father will like
from what I can tell from looking at the internet websites, $340 isn't that unreasonable for 2 beds for that weekend; the catch is that you need 2 beds
Try the Milford Plaza. It recently reopened after being closed over a year for renovations. Great location on 44th/8th Avenue. Rates for 2 double beds run between $200-$249 at the time of year on the weekends.
...you can rent a room in someone's apartment or even the whole caboodle.
We're over from the UK in May (and what's the chance of discounts for How to Succeed...after April 24?) and have booked an apartment on Perry Street for the week.
yeah, if your really research the internet on all the sites like hotwire, etc. you can get some incredible deals. i stayed in the Hudson , by Columbus Circle, for less than $200 last summer. in fact, i think closer to $150. Great hotel and service.
When I go to NYC, I stay at the Holiday Inn on 57th Street. It's about half the price of the theater district hotels, and it's only a 15-minute walk to Times Square. My Facebook page
The term cheap is relative in NYC. If your father doesn't think that $200 is a bargain by NYC standards, you're not going to get your trip. I often stay at the Hotel Edison. It's in Times Square, clean decent sized rooms and can sometimes be had for $189. I'm staying there in April and paying $245 -- it's a busy weekend in the city.
The SALISBURY HOTEL, 212-246-1300 (123 W 57TH ST) is $219.00 per night for a standard room with two beds. It's on the nice block, across the street from Carnegie Hall between 6th & 7th Avenues. Hotel rates fluctuate (just like airline fares) but that is the rate right now for the weekend you're going.
Try priceline.com. You can often get a 3.5 to 4 star hotel for as little as $160/night; a 3 star hotel is still fine. Just call the hotel after priceline has booked your room, and ask for a room with 2 beds. We did it for several years and never had a problem getting one room with 2 beds for my son and daughter.
Hampton Inn Manhattan-Times Square North 851 Eighth Avenue For Friday, July 1 - Sunday, July 3 = 228.65/night
Hampton Inn Manhattan/Times Square South 337 West 39th Street For Friday, July 1 - Sunday, July 3 = 305.15/night I have stayed at this hotel in the past. It's location on 39th Street (btwn 8th & 9th) puts it at walking distance to most of the theatres. It was clean and the staff was friendly
Hampton Inn Manhattan-35th St/Empire State Bldg 59 W. 35th Street For Friday, July 1 - Sunday, July 3 = 233.10 This is the hotel I booked for my mom when I gave her a weekend in NYC for Christmas 2009. I chose this one for its proximity to Penn Station
If you wait a week the one on 8th Ave actually goes down: Hampton Inn Manhattan-Times Square North 851 Eighth Avenue For Friday, July 9 - Sunday, July 10 = 211.65/night

We must have different Gods. My God said "do to others what you would have them do to you". Your God seems to have said "My Way or the Highway".
I used to get good deals at the Skyline Motel - 10th Ave. at 49th or 50th St. Nice rooms, nice lobby and retaurant. Only problem is that the walk to The theatre district is a little iffy for young women alone. You'd have to take a taxi back after dark. No problem during the day, though.
The last time I was there was 2002 - I paid $99 a night. I know prices have shot way up since then.
Agree with the poster who said "Jersey City" - I was just in the city for New Year's (12/29 to 1/1). All the hotels were well over $300. Used Priceline, limited it to 4 stars in Jersey City/Hoboken area (there are only 2 or 3 4 star hotels there). Got into the W Hoboken for $130/night!!! FANTASTIC hotel. 3 block walk to the Path train - straight shot, 12 minutes, to Herald Square at 34th & Broadway. Need to plan, so you don't have to go back to the room, but WELL worth it. (if you can fly into Newark, there's even transportation to and from the airport.)
