So what do I do if finally for the first time the one I'm burning for returns the glow? If love has come at last it's picked the worst time still I know- I've got to go
crap, I guess we're going real obscure here. that lyric is from "HOW NOW, DOW JONES" but I can't recall the song, and it's not worth having to listen to that album in order to figure it out. Is it "They Don't Make 'Em Like That Anymore"? That's my best guess.
and since we're going with the high-difficulty tunes, here's one: "I sent 'em Travellers Checks! But they were never enough! Five of 'em sick, twelve in school, Those youngsters had it rough! I couldn't rest Till they had the best In stereos and jeans, Y'know, good American stuff!"
this is a pretty hard one since the album is not available on CD. here's another verse from the same song:
"When I was in China I was like a lonely Marine. Talked to lots of pretty little local girls, Whores in between. Though I up and left As soon as I could, Those women were bearin' The fruit of my carin' Too much for my own good!"
HINT: it was sung by a Tony-winner from the past 5 years.
"The last train out of any station will not be full of nice guys." - Dr. Hunter S. Thompson
"I wash my face, then drink beer, then I weep.
Say a prayer and induce insincere self-abuse,
till I'm fast asleep"- In Trousers
since I got the last 2, I'll toss in another lyric to figure out. this one is a bit easier than the previous:
"ONE DAY THE PRESS, THEY TELL YOU, YOU'RE THE MAN. THEN ONE WEEK ON, THEY'LL SAY YOU STINK. THAT'S HOW IT GOES; EV'RY NEWSMAN KNOWS A LITTLE BLOOD MAKES FOR SOME INTERESTING INK.
THE CIRCUS BARKERS ON THE NETWORK NEWS ASK HOW A MAN CAN SINK SO LOW. WELL, LET 'EM STARE AT THE SIDESHOW THERE. WHO WOULDN'T WANNA SEE THE FREAK WHO RUNS THE SHOW"
If you know the main song, you can probably figure it out based on the rhyme structure.
"The last train out of any station will not be full of nice guys." - Dr. Hunter S. Thompson
"I wash my face, then drink beer, then I weep.
Say a prayer and induce insincere self-abuse,
till I'm fast asleep"- In Trousers
the 1st one is from a major flop that played a few months on Broadway in the last 25 years. The 2nd is a high-profile import that has yet to make it to Broadway but has enjoyed several successful runs elsewhere in the US.

"I wash my face, then drink beer, then I weep.
Say a prayer and induce insincere self-abuse,
till I'm fast asleep"- In Trousers
good guesses both, but no. the 2nd is on the right track. maybe high-profile is the wrong term. not a show with the same support as GUERRE but had a great run in a major regional house with top-level talent.
I'll edit to add another verse to the 1st song, since it is pretty elusive.

Dicky, darling little dicky I'm so proud of my little plump, little shy, little cuddely chap Dicky! Dicky! Always lying flat on you fat tummy Here, on your dear mummy's lap Stop Barking! Even, when I have to scold you Mommy's just as thrilled as can be how magnificently you obey!
Feel free to ask for clues if need be, but its not that obscure, I know two or three people on this board who should definitly know this one. [If not more]
I have several names, one is Julian2. I am also The Opps Girl. But cross me, and I become Bitch Dooku!
"A: Who am I kiddin, I'm no youngster! B: You're only mature like an old cheese! A: It takes me hours just to pee! B: Ya pee'd enough already! BOTH: This is exactly the kind of a job For some old fart like me!"
not sure why this show came to mind, I think I'm just in the mood for this cast album at the moment. and I do have to pee. funny how life so often imitates art and vice versa.

"I wash my face, then drink beer, then I weep.

I guess the game has died down since the weekend, but in case anyone's still playing I thought I'd bump this. Somebody got DOONESBURY right but still no correct answers for the other 2 songs I posted. Final hint: both are by American writers and have had major US runs, but both had their world premieres overseas

Broadway Matt, is the first set from The Fix? I know I know those lyrics -- I can even sing them -- but I can't think of where they are from!
"You pile up enough tomorrows, and you'll find you are left with nothing but a lot of empty yesterdays. I don't know about you, but I'd like to make today worth remembering." --Harold Hill from The Music Man
yep, it's from THE FIX- one of several fine Dempsey/Rowe musicals that have been denied the US exposure they deserve. the show was much better received in its US premiere (Signature Theatre, VA) than it was originally at the Donmar Warehouse. Of course it is all about American politics, so that makes sense.
so I guess it's your move Enjolras.
