im not sure if there had been anything on this o not, but if there has im extremely sorry
The other day i was watching mulan (the disney movie) and thinks to myself, this would a kindof a kool show on broadway, i mean i dont know if its been tried or anything, but i think it would be nice, although itd be a disney show

Yup,
It's been discussed and many agree with you, myself included.
Some of the best set designs I have ever done were for a projct that invovled interpretting this movie for stage.

Posted: 1/26/06 at 7:00pmI could see it as a musical and I know for a fact they have done it on ice because I remember watching when I was 11 or 10. I'm sure they could make a great musical out of it.

I think it would make a great musical. It was one of the last great Disney movie-musicals and it has a great story. I can just see how beautiful of a show it could possibly be, just make sure it doesn't star:
1) Lea Salonga
2) A Giant Helicopter
Other than that I think it'll work.

I would love to see this on stage! Although I too don't know that it'd work for most of the general public. But it could be so beautiful.
(random story: friend and I were at Disneyland 'bout six months back, and saw Mulan walking around the park, and were SO excited. And we're both well into our 20s, not small children or anything. :) But to see one of the 'other princesses' out and about was just so. cool.)

Posted: 1/26/06 at 11:55pmMTI rents "Mulan Jr." in its Junior series. Some problems involve how you present Cri-kee and how you use an ensemble of kids to be both Huns and Imperial Soldiers. But it's good music, certainly.

I don't think Disney is destroying Broadway, all I can say is thank God there's still some old-fashioned showtunes, and Disney is one of the very few (aside from revivals) producing it. I welcome Disney to Broadway. You can have your Piazza and Avenue Q's (my opinion of course),...I would rather spend my money on MAME, and FIDDLER-type entertainments.

I don't mind Disney on Broadway but c'mon, they need a limit to the # of shows they can have running. Also, I don't think they planning on turning Mulan into a musical as of yet. They're still working on Tarzan and Little Mermaid.

Posted: 1/27/06 at 1:59amI agree that Disney has done good things for Broadway, but I am a little worried about them monopolizing the scene. BATB and Lion King are both running strong, Tarzan and The Little Mermaid are in the works. Mary Poppins is transferring over from the West End. I think Mulan would probably make a terrific show, but it's probably best for the state of Broadway to lay off on the Disney shows a bit so there is still room for new works to come in.

I'm not a Disney hater, but I have to agree that there should be a limit to how much they can put onstage in a given time.
I do think Mulan would've been a lot better than Tarzan (I'm not a big Phil Collins fan...)
Also, the story of Mulan comes from a Chinese legend. It could pheasibly be turned into a musical that's completely different from the Disney movie: the female soldier who dresses as a man to take her father's place in war? That's a show I'd love to see (just no singing dragons...please)

Of course it won't happen, since MULAN was only a minor hit (I'm surprised they're doing TARZAN as it is), but in another universe....
If a stage adaptation MULAN was conceived in the vein of Taymor's THE LION KING (incorporating elements of the source culture into the staging), it would be amazing. Imagine Chinese theatrical devices, design and acrobats. MULAN is also an ideal choice for adaptation because there are four or five songs in the film, which means a large amount of new musical material would be written for the stage.
It would also help employ the many uber-talented Asian American actors who, unfortunately, are often overlooked by Broadway's casting.
