A parent of a child I work with sent me this article. I thought it may provide a little insight to how a parent feels about the use of certain terminology. At the end it gives examples of more preferred language.

I usher at some of the broadway houses and have seen this problem before. The LAST thing we would want is to make the person leave. Normally we would tell the chaperone that a few people have been complaining and ask them to keep it down if possible. If that doesn't work we will offer to move them into a box. And other times the chaperone will just take the person into the lobby and watch the show on the monitor for a while and maybe stand in the back of the theater so they are close to the door incase of another outburst.

But the last thing we want is to make anyone leave for circumstances beyond their control

I actually had an experience with a mentally impaired audience member quite recently. Last week, my parents and I were in Orlando for spring break. We were at the Indiana Jones Stunt Spectacular at MGM Studios and this kid who I can only assume was autistic was making a bit of a disturbance. He would basically squeal with delight every time something exciting happened. You can say he was enjoying himself. I wouldn't blame ya. I'm sure he did enjoy himself. But it was disturbing for me and my family members and his mother was doing his best to keep him calm. Later, we ran into the family at one of the restaurants and he was making a bit of a scene. Also, throughout the show, he kept kicking my mom.

re: Mentally Impaired Audience Members

This is for George95, who thinks that, because he works with the Special Olympics, it's okay to use the word retarded.

George95 said, "The word retarded can sometimes be offensive. Of course. However, it is by no means right up there with the racial and homophobic slurs that theaterdiva compared it to, and by no means should we banish retarded from our vocabulary."

YEA. RIGHT.

Special Olympics takes on use of 'R-word'

(CNN) -- An unexpected and sudden spotlight on the Special Olympics, an organization that for more than 40 years has served and honored those with intellectual disabilities, comes less than two weeks before the nonprofit launches a new campaign: Spread the Word to the End the Word.

I think it's a very good reason to bump the thread.

This was clearly a lengthy discussion on the board, and TheatreDiva has some valid updated information regarding a subject that was disputed throughout it, so he bumped it up.

Well, regardless, I think that is a very interesting article and an important campaign the Special Olympics are putting out this year, and I'm glad it was posted somewhere on this board so I could see it. This thread seemed like an appropriate place, in my opinion.

So you only follow news that is posted on this board?

This "campaign" has been talked about and featured on many news websites and media outlets (on television).

Do you follow normal news?

I remember this thread (I re-read it all today), and while it did contain a lot of interesting dialogue, it would seem that it was bumped not in the interests of education, but rather to settle an old grudge.

The poster that bumped it starts the first post after an entire year by attacking another poster, out of context. George95 (who is likely no longer on the boards to defend himself) has a cousin who is severely disabled, and George spoke eloquently, respectfully, and with much love about him and the experience of growing up with him.

Bump the thread to shine a light on March 31st, the linked "day of awareness", sure, but when you start it off with a personal attack, it diminishes the nobility of the gesture.

The Special Olympics is against the word RETARD, as the always have been.

Theaterdiva unfortunately confused the word RETARDED and RETARD.

Obviously, neither of the words should be used as an insult or in an condescending manner. And, RETARD should never be used at all.

RETARDED is a medically necessary term, as I explain about 10,000 times on this thread already (which theaterdiva was such a sweetheart for dragging back into our lives)

My 28-year-old cousin, who does not know his name, who cannot use toilet paper, who cannot prepare his own food, who is totally helpless, is today living in a private single family home with 24-nursing care alllllllllll because he was able to receive the "mentally retarded" classification. Mentally challenged? He'd be homeless. Impaired? Homeless.

Does this mean I walk around saying "My cousin is REEEEEEETAAAAARDEEEEED!!!! No, I use the word only when absolutely necessary and with all necessary tact.

Now if only all of posters could do the same. But, as this is BWW, bring on the personal attacks.............

I work with the developmentally disabled all the time. And we use the word retarded all the time as a diagnosis, just like george95 says. IT IS A MEDICAL DIAGNOSIS. Now if we were to use the term RETARD we would get fired on the spot. The word RETARD should never be used at all.

Apologies, George, for speaking for you. You are clearly capable of speaking for yourself. I hadn't seen your name for awhile, but then I don't spend a lot of time here for reasons I'm sure we both understand. The pettiness and negativity, just for starters.

As I'd said, I re-read the entire thread today (which I would recommend for anyone unfamiliar with it do if they want to comment on it) and I found your posts profoundly moving. Thanks for sharing your very personal experiences.

"I use the word only when absolutely necessary and with all necessary tact."

And when, exactly is that, George?

You have no tact, as anyone can see by your PM:

"I can't decide if the better word for you is Dummbass or Bitch. I think you're perfect cross between the two.

The Special Olympics doesn't want people to say the word RETARD. Not RETARDED.

Again, youre a dumbass.

RETARD is a slur, an insult, just like kike, fag, n* etc.

RETARDED is a medical term that is NEEDED for people like my 28yearold mentally retarded cousin who would not receive his benefits that are necessary to provide round-the-clock nursing care unless he was officially declared mentally retarded. If he was declared mentally challenged? No benefits. Impaired? No benefits.

Now please, go back to being a grumpy old bitch."

Wow theaterdiva has to resort to putting private emails up on a public message board.

Unlike theaterdiva, I prefer to keep all the negative crap off the public messageboard. My apologies for emailing such an unstable person.

Ghostlight, thanks for the kind words. : )

I posted your words to show what a dumb ass YOU are.

To you, it's still okay to call someone retarded and say what ever rude thing you want, as long as it's in a PM.

You are pathetic.

The only thing that should be kept in a PM is the personal insults. I had the tact to kept my personal insults off the public board. You insist on keeping the insults on the board.

As anybody can see, I said the same exact thing on the PM as I did on the board.....except for the personal insults meant especially for you and ONLY you since you WILL NOT LEAVE ME ALONE!!!

I haven't read all 17 pages of this thread, but it seems to me there are other ways of addressing someone rather than "retarded". Why even go there? I think most people would look at that as insulting and derogatory, imo.
