Marianne Elliott and Miranda Cromwell to helm National Theatre's WEST SIDE STORY

A major London revival of the Broadway classic WEST SIDE STORY has been announced.

The revival will be coming to the National Theatre in Winter 2027, co-directed in a new production reuniting directors Marianne Elliott and Miranda Cromwell after their award-winning West End and Broadway revival of Death of a Salesman.

Featuring Jerome Robbins’ original choreography reproduced and adapted by Julio Monge, who was artistic collaborator and consultant on Steven Spielberg’s 2021 film adaptation.

WEST SIDE STORY has a book by Arthur Laurents (Gypsy), music by Leonard Bernstein (On the Town) and lyrics by Stephen Sondheim (Follies).

WEST SIDE STORY will play the Olivier Theatre, National Theatre. Further artistic team, casting, performance dates, and on sale to be announced.

With the Olivier's Drum Revolve, they can do some very interesting things with staging.

As someone who was in the minority of loving everything about the Ivo van Hove revival, I’d really welcome a truly fresh interpretation from top to bottom. Marianne Elliott is certainly known for that, so I have faith. And what a massive canvas to work on.

I wouldnt say I loath it, but im definitely not a big fan of it and dont really get the fuss. Some great songs and dancing, but I've never really enjoyed the piece as a whole on stage or film.

Performances begin November 2027.

How likely will this be performing until May 2028?

Co-sign. I didn't love everything about Ivo's but I loved what I did like.

And I'm intrigued by this combo of directors and classic choreo.
