Came back from Spring Awakening matinee with Doyle as Melchior. For a young originating actor with someone younger filling in a Tony-nominated role, Doyle held the audience in the palm of his hands.
"All That's Known" was simply clear and crisp. As for "Left Behind," you can feel the grief and bitterness through his performance. I extremely enjoyed his fresh rendition of "Totally F*CKed," a song that can probably be sung in many trite ways. It definitely merited the audience's prolonged applause.
Congratulations, Matt! Updated On: 7/14/07 at 08:07 PM
I was there too! I'd give him [and the rest of the cast] a standing ovation, but I was in standing room so that's given.
Such a nice guy- his family was there at stage door, in tears because of all the support and compliments, from young and old.
Off-topic: The first people who got there apparently arrived at midnight. Got there at 7:30am, almost near 8th Avenue. By the time they started handing out tickets, line waiters wrapped around the block.
Hey! I am new to the board. Well not really. This is my friend laurens account. But I wanted to write in since I saw Matt today and she didn't. Anyways My name is Alana. Ok sooo Matt Doyle as Melchoir:
Well. He was alright. I think the reason I didn't enjoy most of him as Melchior is because he was so nervous and it was his first show on for Groff. Totally understand. Nerves are a crazy thing. I felt his acting was a little amature. His vocals were weaker than Groffs. He went off key and cracked during "Mirror Blue Light". Speaking of off key..is anyone going to tell Gideon Glick to work on his pitch? THIS IS BROADWAY PEOPLE! What the heck is Gideon doing singing off Key? I have seen the show 3 times and everytime Gideon sounds really off in parts of BOL and Touch Me. Ugh! Anyway. I did really enjoy some of Matt's acting choices. "All Thats Known" was great! Vocally and Acting wise. I felt so bad for him during the "sex scene" if you will. He was visably shaking from nerves when he was about to pull his pants down. Some of the timing during that scene was messy. Groff and Michele just have it down perfect I guess. Also oddly enough, there were times when Lea looked older than Matt. He is really thin and looks like he is 13 with a 21 year-old voice. Odd. All the other boys look older than him as well. I honestly dont know how i feel about him? To sum it up. He was alright.
ALSO
Spring Awakening as a whole needs to get their energy back. Remy looks bored to tears as well as Gideon.
I heard for a few people who saw it that she seemed better with Matt than with Groff. Lea is in a way too comfortable with Groff in the hayloft scene, and makes it less believable. With Matt she obviously isn't as comfortable with him so, the hayloft scene and such was made more believable.
Aslo, Matt couldn't even talk yesterday so his voice was kind of weak. He still did quite well under those circumstances. At the stage door everyone was complimenting him but he couldn't talk because he was saving his voice. Updated On: 7/14/07 at 09:50 PM
"ot: people are getting in the Spring Awakening rush line at *midnight*?? wow- that's hardcore."
I'm pretty sure it was only like that because tons of people knew that Matt was going to be on as Melchior today. I doubt it'll be so insane on a regular day.
I got there at 8, yes that was a little late but I had an hour drive and I didn't drive myself...if I had I would have waken up at 5 and would have gotten there around 6 but O well. I got there expecting for some people to back out of there plans but they obviously didn't.
I counted 75 people and then I stopped counting when it wrapped around the block.
I was bummed, but I saw another show which is always a good pick-me-up. I came back at the stage door just to see what people were saying because it was on my way.
I read somewhere that he was fumbling with the buttons on Lea's dress and that he was visibly shaking, making the hayloft scene badly timed. That's what I heard but I also hear good things like his nervousness made it looked real.
QUESTION: I noticed many many people waiting. Why would they sit if it is obvious that a sold out show would not have that many SRO tix or Student Rush?
Also, for Spring Awakening, do they hold a certain number a tix for student rush or is it just the seats that are left? I always buy my tickets so I wouldn't know.
Saw both shows today. He was far better in the night show, vocally at least. "Left Behind" and "Mirror Blue Night" were his two biggest problems in the matinee but he knocked them out of the park in the night show.I definitely thought he and Lea worked better then with Groff. I am a firm believer in serendipity- all the random pieces coming together in one wonderful moment, when suddenly you see what their purpose was all along.
Matt was totally brilliant. His vocals were weak, but you have to keep in mind that he is sick with bronchitis, I believe. His acting was completley out of this world. Better than Groff in many areas. Updated On: 7/15/07 at 02:11 AM
Matt must be jumping off the walls with all this love he's getting. I bet Brian and Gerard are just itching for Gallagher to take a personal day so they can have their turns.
The earliest I've ever seen for rush for JB was 12:45 AM, and that was the people in front of us the Friday before they did away with it. I still can't believe they got there at midnight. Wow.
Interesting to know that Jonathan Groff was out. Personal day, huh? Did people actually know in advance? I'm going on the 26th and truly, truly hope to see Groff. Out of curiousity alone, how old is this Matt Doyle? Many thanks. Best.
