Truly bananas that Mantello would be able to stage three new Broadway productions in the same season. I happen to think he's one of our best directors (I know opinion is divided on that front), but...literally, how would he even have the time? I assume this would be the David Hare play Montauk that was mentioned in the big NYT article on Rudin, but...who knows!

Montauk is already announced as Laura Linney and Daniel Sullivan, not Metcalf and Mantello.
I would guess it's whatever the "unannounced Broadway play" that had an audition notice out recently with a role for a woman in their 60's with an offer out.

Montauk is happening at MTC, Rudin is no longer involved due to creative differences. I’m wandering if it’s the new Bruce Norris play Cottonfield

COTTONFIELD was being directed by Robert O'Hara. I understand the play has a lot to do with race, so that would make more sense than Mantello directing...

It's doable, but a feat of careful scheduling that requires great associate directors, SMs, and GMs. And it helps that all 3 have the same producer.
There are many examples of it working out just fine. Michael Greif had 3 openings in 3.5 months in 2024 (Days of Wine & Roses, Notebook, Hell's Kitch), Scott Ellis had 2 Broadway musicals in the spring of 2019 (TOOTSIE and KISS ME KATE) and three shows in 2014-15 (You Can't Take It With You, Elephant Man, On the 20th Century).
What makes this one tricky is that Downstate opens late in the fall season (Nov 15), and SMS starts previews early in the spring season (Feb 18 prev, Mar 18 opening). So the Metcalf play probably needs to start perfs in December or January, or it needs to open at the end of April and have a quicker rehearsal/preview process. And it goes without saying that Metcalf without an equal-or-greater costar is not a great box office bet.

Nothing would make me happier than that, but I asked her about this last year and she said it’ll sadly never happen.

This was the last production I saw before theaters shut down and (surprising no one) she was absolutely magnificent - but sadly, I don't think it'll ever be re-mounted.

The Shakespeare Theater of Nj is doing Virginia Woolf right now. I’m looking forward to seeing it, they do excellent productions.

There is going to be a revival of "Night Mother" at Goodman in Chicago with S.Epatha Merkerson next spring.
