Re: LMM working on THE WARRIORS musical?

So curious about this one. I was re-listening to the album and it is more engaging than I remembered and feels very theatrical.

"Sophomore syndrome" is real, though, and no matter what happens this will not hit the heights (hehe) of the generational hit that is HAMILTON. And the Lunt is a big house and HAMILTON is a somewhat economical show all things considered.

This might have been discussed already, but assuming there aren't major new additions to the written material, is this going to be eligible for Best Score? Or does the fact that it was a "concept album" make it eligible?

Re: LMM working on THE WARRIORS musical?

I really cannot imagine this not being eligible for Best Score. I had always understood the score to be a Broadway-bound property with the concept album as a way to drive interest and development.

AIDA had a concept album released before the show premiered on Broadway and was still eligible and won. This will be fine.

Aren't there many examples of this? CHESS, EVITA, JESUS CHRIST SUPERSTAR, HADESTOWN?

Probably the most striking example is The Who’s Tommy, which won Best Score (tying with Kiss of the Spider Woman) in 1993, nearly 25 years after the album was released.

Perhaps a slightly different situation since it originated on television rather than on record, but the majority of Schmigadoon’s Tony-winning score was previously released as well.

Schmigadoon is indeed a different situation because it would not normally be considered eligible from having been created for a different medium (see Smash), but they had proved that more than 50% of it was new material specific to the stage show and thus it was eligible.

The first 3 of those came out before the rule-change about being "written for the theatre" and the "classics" rule.

Before that rule-change, it was a lawless time where basically anything new-to-Broadway was deemed eligible for Best Score, such as TOMMY, GIGI, SEVEN BRIDES, and the extremely-posthumous noms/wins for R&H (State Fair), T.S. Eliot (Cats), and perhaps most egregiously Scott Joplin (Treemonisha, nominated 60 years after his death).

I didn't know this! Thank you!

I remain surprised that Schmigadoon was deemed eligible and even more surprised that voters went for it. I guess it speaks to how weak the support for the other scores was this year.

Re: LMM working on THE WARRIORS musical?

I’m sure I am only one of three people with this opinion, but the fact that QoV didn’t get nominated for best score over two plays with incidental music was even a bigger crime.

It was downright mean-spirited. The show wasn't great but c'mon... neither were the other shows.

I agree. And the voters are only supposed to consider the new elements (meaning, no song that was in the TV show) ---- but of course there's no way to enforce that. And the voters clearly liked Schmig more than I did.

I think I read somewhere that they were working/re-working a new opener. But I doubt there are major changes from the concept album. Tweaks for sure

I think once you get over the eligibility hurdle, you're completely on equal footing with all other scores. Most voters won't know or care about what is new versus preexisting, and they'll vote for you if they liked the score as a whole. Newsies is a great example - I'm sure that score won because voters liked all the songs from the movie, not because of the strength of the new material.

Re: LMM working on THE WARRIORS musical?

It probably helps that the album was pretty clearly a large-scale proof of concept that was always intended to make it to the stage anyway.

I also thought about this as big-scale both the concept album and the material is, in many ways it’s also a very intimate piece. Think about it: most of the entire show takes place in a subway car with a gang on the run so if I were in Jenny Koons or Andy’s shoes as a director I might wanna incorporate some onstage seating/standing areas ala Jellicle Ball and Every Brilliant Thing as well as JCS and very soon RENT in the West End. I would also consider collaborating with different street dance choreographers throughout the city for each gang the warriors come across. One name id love to see is Kyla Bullings for the Rogues

Re: LMM working on THE WARRIORS musical?

Does anyone have any insider info as to when previews begin? I’ve got two open spots on my March 19-21 trip and would love to catch this.

Re: LMM working on THE WARRIORS musical?

Yeah I’m curious about dates too. Obviously us has to open before Tony cut offs but I’m going in early April and this is one of the shows I want to see just wondering if I will be seeing it in previews or not

Am I crazy, but no it doesn't? There are sections on a subway car, but that's not the bulk of the setting...

I mean yes sure…but it is in a way an intimate character piece for a musical…where it feels like ur on a subway car with them.

The announcement says previews start in March, and my guess - given no out-of-town previews - is that there will be a long preview period with the show opening closer to the Tony cutoff deadline.

I will be in New York City in early April as well. I assume previews will have started because the creatives will need time to make adjustments. Will you see the final, locked version of the musical? Probably not. But I think the show will be open by then.

It might have started previews by March 19-21, but I am less sure of that.

Re: LMM working on THE WARRIORS musical?

Not exactly “sophomore” effort for Lin-Manuel; that was Hamilton (after In the Heights). Plus, of course, his work on Bring It On, and New York, New York, etc. Still, it has been a while…

Re: LMM working on THE WARRIORS musical?

Previews will be 3-4 weeks. They've had work sessions. They currently doing more. There has been regular casting and casting for boxers, skaters, dancers, acrobatics, stage combat and martial combat / stunt performers and beyond. This process has been going for years quietly - so i can't see previews being beyond a month (5 weeks most if they want to tony eligibility)
