Macbeth by William Shakespeare was adapted in our primary school recently as a musical and it was a fantastic success.

I'm not sure if there ever was a musical version of it, besides a regional theater version of it, but Great Expectations would make a great musical. Also, perhaps you could make Gone with the wind work...

Also, my absolutely favorite book of all time is The 10th Kingdom, but it is technically a TV movie as well. But still, it's still so well written.

macbeth might be interesting.
my highschool did a production of as you like it, set it in the 60s, and put music in it and it was actually very good (and yes my highschool's theatre department is quite pretentious :)

I’ve always thought The Crucible could make a powerful musical, but now there’s been an opera made of it so…
