Likely what will happen is that he will do almost all of the performances with Austin Smith and possibly Andrew Chapelle stepping in enough so that he won't be in defiance of equity rules- isn't there a point where if an understudy does a certain amount of performances in a row, they must be offered a contract? "
Sydney is engaged as Burr until BVD arrives. He will be listed as such in the Playbill as of tomorrow, and with the League and his union. (IBDB already has the correct designation.) He is not the understudy. His understudy, Smith, Chapelle or whomever, would only go on if he relinquished a performance. The reason there was no announcement is that there was no need for one. He is a temporary replacement for heaven's sake. The pay supplement he is losing is $50; I said it as a joke. There is no rule such as the one you describe, and all of the cast members including understudies, alternates and swings already have contracts.
