She's adorable and talented but I don't think she can sing the score. I think that's why people are possibly having issues believing it. She isn't a name but neither are Ms. Levy or Ms. Bean, so why not cast a gal with pipes?

To add to the Beanie rumor, one of BWW's editors posted this cryptic GIF of someone putting on a beanie, before her name was mentioned in this thread.

She's only at the ART  in December, not even the full run of Wild.(1776 revival is playing in the summer.

As a gypsy a.k.a. Louise. One major consideration is the majority of the plot has a Fanny Brice is a very young character. It’s only at the end of the show when Nickygets out of prison that she’s in her 30s.

Why is everyone not really a fan of Lady Gaga to play Fanny? Or reluctant, more rather. She's very quintessentially New York, audiences would DEFINITELY flock to see her, and she'd most likely get EGOT status.

I was just thinking since they announced Fanny Brice has already been cast, could it be Anne Hathaway? I thought there has been rumors about her wanting to return to Broadway.

I think she would be incredible, she is a superstar and it would be sold out 6 days a week. I would love for it to happen but Impeach's comment below is why it may not be a reality.

Aren’t Beanie’s fundamentals much bigger than two lentils ? But yes she and Ramin are cast I hear.

me personally, Jessie as Fanny (or Annaleigh), Paolo Szot as Nick, and Ms Streisand to direct.

Completely agree! I do wonder about the possibility of the stagedoor in 2022 (if Funny Girl were to debut during that time with a big star), especially when big stars come to Broadway. (i.e., Brendon Urie to Kinky Boots) Tickets will sell like hotcakes but fans will flock to the theatre with one intention to only see the star on stage, which is definitely a bummer to people/theatergoers who have came to enjoy the entire show and its entire cast of performers.

I definitely see a live action Funny Girl happening, moreso in 2024 or onward. For some reason, I'm not really imagining Gaga as Fanny in it unless she wanted to win Best Actress for the role (if she doesn't win for House Of Gucci).

Sutton Ross said: "I don't know what happened with the planned revival of this in 2012 starring Lauren Ambrose. She was so good in My Fair Lady, I really would have loved to see her what she could have done with the role."

Bartlett Sher's casting of Ambrose as Eliza surprised some. When questioned about the casting it was said.

The casting of Ambrose, a mother of two, as the twentysomething Eliza bewildered some theater folk, but Sher says that 'to get someone who can do all of this, it’s always a surprise. And every single time I’ve ever worked with her, she came in and gave the best audition I’ve ever seen, until the next time she came in for something else."

Lauren approached Sher for the audition. I too really enjoyed her in the role. This was the first musical where I kept going back as much for the crackling dialog in the second act as for the music. The night before her last performance I noticed that a seat down front was available and I grabbed it. I greeted the woman in the seat next to me by telling her that it was the fourth time I had seen the show. She countered that it was her eleventh. I had that to mull over until the curtain call, when she could not contain the fact that she was Lauren's mother.

The next day I read in her "exit interview" in the Times that her father, although he had made opening night, had been dying while she was performing. A diversion to the hospital was necessary on trips into Manhattan. With four weeks left, her father passed away.. What a trial. And what conflicting emotions her mother must have had that afternoon.

I would have liked to see her even audition for the role of Fanny.

darquegk said: "Will it be a sensation though? The question I keep returning to is of what made Funny Girl popular and relevant. When it premiered, Great American Songbook music was still a vibrant thing. (Ironically, the only popular singer today who dabbles in it is indeed Lady Gaga.) Barbra in Funny Girl was singing the music of her time, music that could still sell records, fill concert halls and make people talk. It wasn't Sutton Foster suddenly breaking out as Millie Dillmount, it was a star of stage, screen and records being born, singing then-contemporary pop music in a Broadway show.

I don't know what your time frame is, since the great rush of contemporary vocalists to do albums of standards peaked quite a few years ago, But how many jumped on the bandwagon. I suppose Linda Ronstadt initialized this when she asked Sinatra arranger Nelson Riddle if he would work with her on one song, "I Guess I'll Hang My Tears Out to Dry." Riddle informed her that he only did albums, and she ended up doing three of them.

Perhaps it is Rod Stewart who really got it going when he was so successful with his album. I'll just mention some who I'm familiar with. Gloria Estefan, Paul McCartney, Brian Wilson, Art Garfunkel, Gladys Knight, Smokey Robinson, Marvin Gaye, Diana Ross, Carly Simon, Rita Coolidge, Merle Haggard, Aaron Neville, Leon Russell, Joni Mitchell. Before this grows too tedious I'll end with Bob Dylan, who released an album of ten Sinatra covers. "Visions of Johanna" anyone?

I suppose it is an open question whether "The Great American Songbook" is a discrete and now closed group of songs that represent a peak of American popular music, or if it is a living collection to which the best of popular songs will continue to be added after they had withstood a little test of time. With all the changes in the culture that have occurred and are still occurring since the Songbook was unveiled, the new songs will not be capable of easy comparison with the old.

But the Songbook has one distinguishing factor that is really quite remarkable. It was mostly written by Jewish composers, and of them mostly Jews of the first or second generation who had emigrated from Europe, and of those a large number who had fled Germany or Russia to escape racial persecution. And most of those who had arrived here were congregated in a small number of square miles centered on Manhattan Island.

The list is rather extraordinary:. Irving Berlin, Jerome Kern, George and Ira Gershwin, Lorenz Hart, Richard Rodgers, Oscar Hammerstein II, Kurt Weill, Sheldon Harnick, Jerry Bock, Leonard Bernstein, Stephen Sondheim, Stephen Schwartz, Jule Styne, Sammy Cahn, Jerry Herman, Harold Arlen, Yip Harburg, Marvin Hamlisch, Frederick Loewe, Fred Ebb, Anthony Newley.

If the original Songbook songs continue to retain popularity when the biggest hits composed since have faded away, it will be much due to the presence of so many of the songs in musicals and films that the public will continue to enjoy.

Well I can’t think of one off the top of my head. But Fanny is Jewish. People are always saying roles should be played by people who are authentic. Gaga is a name, but is she Jewish. Could she handle the role. Aren’t there so many other talented people who are Jewish who can do the part. Yes. Just because I can’t name them doesn’t mean they’re not out there in the big world of entertainment.

Oh behave with this act you know exactly Blaxx meant. Can you name a Jewish actor with enough of a following to sell tickets in a major Broadway revival of the show. And the answer is no.

Ambrose's Eliza Dolittle was an absolute revelation. It is a performance I will remember and cherish for the rest of my life. I would kill to see her as Fanny. Also, I'm sure Sher's production of Funny Girl would have been a masterclass in directing a classic show and making it feel fresh and new for today's audiences - as his productions always so flawlessly and effortlessly do.

Definitely disappointed if this really turns out to be Beanie. Yes, she was adorable and funny in Dolly, but we didn’t hear her sing all that much in it (except for Elegance, where the others sang with her). After hearing her a couple of times in virtual benefits like Miscast and the Sondheim tribute, I really believe her voice is only serviceable. It’s the timbre of it that is just okay and not strong enough to carry this kind of score. Sure, it’ll be cute for one song, but for the entire show? I’d like to see her back on Broadway because I think she has a lot to offer, but I don’t think this is the show for her.

I like the idea of an up and comer like Beanie but I'm surprised if it's Beanie and Ramin starring. I think it needs a big name as nick if you have Beanie as Fanny. But Nick is a thankless part so I don't know who would do it.

Well on the other side of this, why are people so convinced she’d be a great Fanny? I just don’t see it. Yes obviously she is talented. Obviously. But I don’t see her in this role. What is making everyone so convinced that she could convincingly take on the role? And why does EGOT status get mentioned so much-like it’s not what actors aim for. It’s what you get if you deserve to be acknowledged that way.

I hope they announce casting soon!

FANNY BRICE - of course I’m holding out for GAGA (and part of me still wants LEA MICHELE to come full circle with that rumoured revival). I really don’t know too many that would sell the show.

MRS. BRICE - ROSIE ODONNELL (I hope that the casting call was just one of those things to see if there’s anything out there. Or if ODONNELL was just going in it for 3 months or something ) I’d also like a pairing of BERNADETTE PETERS. Or even more appropriate (but unrealistic) if STREISAND played her

NICK ARNSTEIN - I really hope CHEYENNE JACKSON returns in this. Or GAVIN CREEL

EDDIE RYAN - CHARLIE STEMP

MRS. STRAKOSH - DONNA MURPHY or ANDREA MARTIN

MRS. MEEKER - JACKIE HOFFMAN

Truly sad but also amazingly funny.  Most of you who act this way on this board are longtime gay male cis New York Broadway denizens between 40 and 65 who are sitting in rent controlled apartments or in apartments you bought in manhattan for $20,000 in 1982.  You have it ALL, what do you have to be so angry about?  If I also suspect Pose2 is Lea Michele and she's just not taking the news very well

Who is producing this revival? Is it still Sonia Friedman & Scott Landis like in London?

Beanie Feldstein is exciting, and necessarily different from Barbra. Annaleigh Ashford might have been my first choice, but Feldstein will bring something unique to the role + a little bit of name notoriety (but not in a way that would overshadow the production). No doubt she's also working with a voice teacher if she's already signed on, to be sure she can handle the score.

Remember, she's playing Fanny Brice. She isn't playing Barbra.
