I love a good flop!

The Woman In White
Lestat
High Fidelity
The Pirate Queen

...What happened next, was stranger still, a woman breathless and afraid, appeared out of the night, completely dressed in white. She had a secret she would tell, of one who had mistreated her. Her face and frightened gaze, my mind cannot erase...But then she ran from view. She looked so much like you...

Give me a flop over a success anyday!
Marvin Hamlish 1983 'Jean Seberg'
'Spin Of The Wheel" dire musical where the audience were the audience of a game show. The 'come on down' audience plant was none other than Maria Friedman in one of her first West End roles.

A young actress with Noel coward after a dreadful opening night performance said to him 'Well, i knew my lines backwards this morning!'' Noels fast reply was ''Yes dear, and thats exactly how you said them tonight'!'

The Pirate Queen x2
Coram Boy x2
Grey Gardens x1 by flop's usual definition

Does anyone know if The Year of Magical Thinking recouped? I mean, I wouldn't think it would have had a huge running cost other than salary, but I never heard. If not, I was HONORED to see that financial "flop" nine times. And I loved every moment of every time.

saw high fidelity in its boston tryout and while i didnt think it was fantastic, it didnt deserve to tank as much as it did.
saw dance of the vampires and absolutely loved every second of it. it felt like i was in a theater of flop lovers who were there for the great story to tell their friends in twenty years. my parents were at opening night of Rags on broadway, and they loved it. and its one of my favorite musicals too.

Great American Trailer Park Musical (x3)
High Fidelity (x2)
The Pirate Queen (x2)
Coram Boy (x1)
Lestat (x1)

And then, if we're counting...
The Wedding Singer (x2)
Sweeney Todd revival (x1)
Grey Gardens (x1)

I'm still a little bummed that I never saw In My Life, though.

eta: ok, I wasn't 'lucky' to see these in that I *liked* all of them (two viewings and I still didn't like Wedding Singer), but I was 'lucky' in that I was lucky enough to see them before they closed.

I've only seen two shows that would be considered flops.

Grey Gardens (Love it, it's in my top five musicals)
The Pirate Queen (Chicago tryout. . in the balcony. . tried so hard to like it, but it just wasn't happening)

Is Boy From Oz a flop?

I saw Little Women and enjoyed it, actually. And my biggest Broadway-related regret is letting myself be talked out of going to see Grey Gardens. ("Sure, I'll go see Legally Blonde, Mom!")

No, The Boy From Oz recouped, making it a hit. I believe it was a critical flop though, except for rave reviews for Hugh Jackman.

There were some mentioned I didn't think really were flops. I was just going to say Times They Are a Changin' (3 times), but I guess Tarzan and Wedding Singer are on the list too...

Do those of you who mentioned NICK & NORA really feel lucky to have seen it? For me, it was the worst musical I have seen in 56 years of theatregoing. Lucky I wasn't.

For those of you who keep posting the Sweeney Todd revival as a flop, you need to get some facts straight. It was neither a critical or financial flop:

"It arrived on Broadway from a London engagement originally staged by the Watermill Theatre. The Broadway production recouped its entire $3.5 million investment just 19 weeks after opening."
Broadway's Sweeney Todd Closes Shop On 9/3; Tour set for '07

"Smart! And into all those exotic mystiques -- The Kama Sutra and Chinese techniques. I hear she knows more than seventy-five. Call me tomorrow if you're still alive!"
