My heart just broke. She’s done so much for so many and continued to model positivity, civic engagement, and kindness in the face of a world becoming progressively devoid of it.

The term “icon” gets thrown around a lot, but it is exactly the one I’d use to describe Dolly Parton. Not just because she was visually and aurally so iconic, but because she was so worthy of being worshipped by the people who appreciated and loved her. She gave us wonderful music, but she also showed us what the human spirit is capable of through her charity work and humanitarian efforts. A truly one-of-a-kind person. What a life!

I literally was gonna say the exact same thing. Dolly Parton is one of the only people to get to that level of fame who nobody had a single bad thing to say about. She’s one of two people ever that has a whole ass theme park named after themselves. She was successful in film, television, theme parks, music and most of all philanthropy. She gave most of her money back to the loyal community she was born by creating jobs for them. But most importantly, she lived to the fullest life of any American entertainer ever and leaves behind a legacy that cannot and should never be underestimated.

Her musical biography Dolly directed by Bartlett Sher will be a great tribute to her artistry as well as her life-giving music and lyrics. How blessed we are to have enjoyed her career, how blessed Broadway will be with her new show.

She seemed like somebody who would always be there. She not only brought us some of the greatest, most definitive American music but also sought to genuinely improve the world and did so with such joy and humor. A truly staggering loss, a rare individual whose immense talent was somehow equal to her character and kindness.

Much will be written about Dolly Parton's hit songs, like ''Jolene'' and ''I Wil Always Love You.'' But I want to call attention to ''From Here to the Moon and Book,'' a lesser-known, but lovely and lilting tune she wrote for "Joyful Noise'' (2012), a wonderful movie written and directed by Todd Graff (who also did ''Camp'' and was a Tony nominee for ''Baby''). Dolly played G.G. Sparrow as she recalls her late husband (Kris Kristofferson), and Jeremy Jordan, in his feature film debut, portrayed Randy, her grandson.
When I did a profile of Jeremy for the N.Y. Daily News on the eve of his starring in ''Newsies,'' opening on Broadway in 2012, I got to quote Dolly, who sang Jeremy's praises: ''I love Jeremy to death. He's a joy to be around and a great singer, too. We got to do a duet ['From Here to the Moon and Back'], which was a real treat.''
