How would you feel if you were trying to get home after work and had to spend and extra half hour writing your name on things or posing for pictures with strangers?
No one has to. They can always use another exit. As I said, if they do use the main exit, they know the fans will be waiting. In that case, it's the responsibility of the performer and the fans to not be rude.
And, to add on to Elphaba's comment, we do know that there are some theatres that don't have other exits for the performers and that the stage door is the only way in and out for them. If that is the case and they just want to go home then it would most likely be in their best interested to be nice about that whole notion rather then being rude about it.

Really? I just assumed all theatres had other exits. If the stage door is the only way out and they really don't feel like dealing with the fans, they could wave to them, thank them for coming, and walk away.
