Got the rush tickets in the front row for The Color Purple last night. Second time seeing the show, and really enjoyed it again.

Anyway, I happened to be sitting right next to American Idol contestant Mandisa, who caused a fervor among the audience. The line for pictures and autographs extended all the way to the back of the orchestra.

Now that the Idols have finished their tour, Mandisa told me she was going into the studio, but it was obvious that during the performance she was eyeing the role of Sofia the whole show.

Any thoughts on that? I think it could be a good fit once replacement time eventually (sadly, I love Felicia) comes. The show fits with her heavily religious background. As much as I'd love to see her in Rent, her professed tolerance but avoidance of homosexual events and themes would prevent her from being the "Seasons of Love" soloist.

She looked absolutely fantastic by the way.

"tolerance but avoidance of homosexual events and themes"

And she wants to go into The Color Purple?

Good point. She did seem a bit taken aback during the big kiss. The show overall, however, is mostly about a deep and personal relationship with God. At least that's what I'd argue.

Mandisa has clarified in interviews that she loves and accepts all people, but does perform at LGBT-related functions due to her religious beliefs. I guess The Color Purple would count as that.

Oh well.

I don't want to give one penny of mine to supporting Mandisa. If she is in TCP there is no way in hell I would go and see it.

Neddy, why do you say that? At least she's not saying that she avoids the topic/people at all cost. She just doesn't feel comfortable, probably because of religion and her upbringing. I mean, I'm 100% fine with lesbians and gays and whatnot, but I would sure as heck feel uncomfortable in a gay bar. She's got her views, but she's respectable, in my opinion, because she acknowledges tolerance and has publicly expressed that she means no harm. She's just uncomfortable.

I would support her in this, Rent, or any other show she may choose. She's got a great voice and a great heart -- I think she'd be an asset to the stage in a way Frenchie may not have been (if she performed as Sofia, rather than a simple soloist singer).

I would not support her because she can not tolerate people for who they are.
