Greatest Showman Musical - News & Discussion Thread

KevinKlawitter said: "Show to open at Royal Drury Lane on West End in spring 2027"

Figured this would open in London first.

A Chorus Line revival played its final Broadway performance on August 17, 2008. The tour played its final performance on August 21, 2011. A new non-equity tour started in October 2012 played its final performance on March 23, 2013. Another non-equity tour launched on January 20, 2018. The tour ended its US run in Kansas City and then toured throughout Japan August & September 2018.

Re: Broadway adaptation of Greatest Showman film musical

Am I the only person who thought the film was watchable and not much more?
Personally I couldn’t think of a more annoying night of theatre than watching this!
But they will never miss my money, it should do spectacularly well.

Well I didn't want to get into it, but he's a Satanist. Every full moon he sacrifices 4 puppies to the Dark Lord and smears their blood on his paino. This should help you understand the score for Wicked a little bit more. Tazber's: Reply to Is Stephen Schwartz a Practicing Christian

It baffles me. Much more than any of the other blockbuster musical films of the last twenty years. I’m with you. It’s watchable. It’s too bland to truly offend but when it went off both I and the person I watched it with shrugged and went “that was a movie.”

Of course you aren't alone. It was "fine" but another stage production I can do without.
If we're not having fun, then why are we doing it? These are DISCUSSION boards, not mutual admiration boards. Discussion only occurs when we are willing to hear what others are thinking, regardless of whether it is alignment to our own thoughts.

I’m completely baffled by the success of the movie. The screenplay is non-existent. The songs are musically pleasant, but the lyrics are so generic - maybe that’s precisely why it appeals to the masses?

I remember hearing some people say a while ago that the movie probably sends audiences on such a high that they become convinced that it's like the greatest thing ever.

This film never appealed to me but sometime in 2022, I went to a screening of it as Lin-Manuel Miranda was doing a pre-screening sit down Conversation with Hugh Jackman at the United Palace in Washington Heights. Hugh’s stories about the film, his casting, and the development of the film were fantastic but needless to say, I got up and walked out of the film about 10 minutes in. Just not for me.

I agree wholeheartedly. Despite the fact that I could have watched it a thousand time on streamers to which I subscribed, I could never get up the interest to see whether I might have been wrong the first time. Never got its success, but I am still happy when any movie musical is successful.

Two grown men who don’t usually like musicals strongly recommended the film to me - as someone said, watchable but not much more than that. When it finished and I said it was ‘fine?’ I was told, “you’ll understand when you’re older”.

Well it’s been almost a decade and I understand it even less now. The real story of PT Barnum is more interesting, albeit less Disney-family-friendly.

I am big. It’s the REVIVALS that got small.
