Broadway Grosses: Week Ending 8/30/26

Unusual yet pleasant to see the numbers go up a bit the week before Labor Day!

Au revoir to MOULIN ROUGE!, as well as Sophie Carmen-Jones, J. Harrison Ghee, Gary Dourdan, Gaby Moreno, John-Michael Lyles, and Jordan Tyson.

I ponder if they are going to shutter STRANGER THINGS before their January closing date. That gross is quite pathetic considering the cost to run, but I suppose Netflix is probably not going to mind burning their money and the Marquis isn’t exactly itching to move a new show in that would expedited the need for the theatre.

I sincerely hope there's a story about just how much money they pissed away keeping that show open. Truly mindboggling sum of money I have no doubt. Do we have any sense of an estimate?

Sutton Ross said: "Two Strangers (Carry a Cake Across New York) has low running costs and will probably wrap up when their contract ends in November. It's a shame more people haven't checked out this incredibly sweet musical."

I haven't seen the show, but I will always root for an original musical and score. I will say that I am more than shocked that Two Strangers lasted this long, tbh. I think they have to be extremely happy to. I thought it might pull a "Bring Back Birdie" and only last a handful of performances on Broadway.

They have been doing a lot of extra stuff like Community nights and singing in the subway (they sounded incredible). I hope it stays open throughout the holidays, it's such an awesome show and I also love rooting for new musicals as well. People complain a lot and request new musicals come to Broadway, yet they don't support them. It's such an interesting thing for me to witness. How many people have their tickets to Galileo yet?

A lot of the big musical houses are going to be empty this fall, majestic, st James, al hirshfeld, plus the winter garden and August Wilson, imperial are being filled by plays. Not too many musicals this fall, that will probably help the long runners.

Netflix has 325 million subscribers. At $8.99 per month, that's about $3B per month. Per MONTH. Let them give back just a bit.

It makes no sense to me why people keep thinking the Just In Time is ready to close. It sold out last week, with the sixth highest average ticket price. It is not grossing what JG grosses, but the producers had to realize that the average price was going to drop significantly with his exit. If selling out with the sixth highest average ticket price is not making the weekly nut, something is seriously wrong.

Re Two Strangers -- which I really enjoyed -- I have to say that I am pretty impressed that it has lasted as long as it has...by the time it closes, it will probably have been open a year for a tiny little musical. The only shame -- and there is a theme here -- is that it will undoubtedly represent a significant loss for the investors. I don't know how original productions receive payout from future tours and stock and regional and school productions, but I imagine this will be playing in every state in no time, due to its charm and really low production costs. I can see it playing in Sarasota, Cape Cod and Maine regional theatres as soon as it is possible.

I continue to wonder how many HP ticket purchasers feel cheated when they discover that Tom Felton's role is miniscule. Just as I wonder whether Christopher Jackson is going to have any impact on Hamilton average ticket prices. Better Daveed Diggs and one of the two female leads, if they are looking for a bump in grosses.

I am convinced that Wicked's grosses would go UP if they started using TKTS...average ticket price of $85?????

The show is a commercial for the network. I bet you anything given there isn't any new accessible content for the STRANGER THINGS IP available for their subscribers to consume at this time, the running losses of the show are probably less than what it would cost to find creative ways to market the IP.

Disney's national tour of FROZEN similarly did abysmal numbers and probably should have closed after its first year but ran for three because to a major entertainment corp, the show exists for multiple reasons.

Sure, it's great if the ventures make money, but its more valuable to Disney/Netflix to keep interest active in their brands on the whole.

And as others have said, the losses are a drop in the bucket for Netflix and probably an easy write-off.

I saw Just In Time last week at the end of my trip. Loved it! Jeremy Jordan is incredible in this. I can't see it closing anytime soon. Hopefully they can find more stars to replace down the line. BTW isn't a $700K gross considered good, or at least decent, for Circle in the Square?
