Best show for a 7 year old?

As far as I've seen, kids LOVE Little Shop. It's a live cartoon. It has a few adult jokes, they go over your head.

The movie is also a lot grizzlier in tone than the show onstage, despite the happier outcome.

Idunno, thank God my parents weren't pearl-clutching prudes who thought I could handle nothing, or couldn't be explained anything.

8 is too young for that movie. Then and now.

I recently revisited BoM to see the OGs. I noticed a little boy. I specifically noticed him because he was wearing a Jaws tshirt and I had a student obsessed with sharks. I was thinking, oh Daquan would love that shirt. Then I thought- who brings a child to BoM-then I saw his mom. It was Annaleigh Ashford! 😳

As for the OP, I’d talk to the parents. Some kids are more mature. I think my nieces would love Little Shop. It really depends on the kid. I don’t think they’d be interested in Maybe Happy Endings. Theater is pricey. You don’t want to spend $$$ for them to be bored. Frankly, you can’t go wrong with Disney. Kids love familiar things. They’ll rewatch those movies over and over. Seeing a live performance of a favorite film is fun. You want to instill a love of theater now, so when they’re older, you can take them to all the shows.

This is reminding me of why my wife and I never came to New York City for more than 22 years. We had children! A New York City trip with at least one young child sounded like a mistake, so we never went.

But our kids were introduced to theater at a young age, seeing the annual local production of the Mencken-Ahrens musical version of A Christmas Carol - and plenty of local productions along with a couple of trips later to the Oregon Shakespeare Festival.

That said, I sort of regret it now, even though our choices would have been more limited. But our kids are both big theater fans as adults, so it worked out. It even gives us a long list of shows to see locally that we never saw during their original Broadway runs.

I do think Wicked is the obvious non-Disney choice if the youngsters liked the movies or The Wizard of Oz. There’s enough spectacle and familiarity to keep the kids from getting too bored.

I don’t see any shows there happening early August, but maybe for the next trip look at New Victory Theater.

If the trip overlap with the Puppet Fringe, consider that!

TDF’s show finder is a good resource too for the future.

Hope it’s a great visit!
