What was the point of reopening this venue by a non-superstar?  They could've asked Bjork to do a residency there and would've been sold out months in advance.  I know i know she's not Broadway....

That art is beautiful. Very Garland-esque.

Maybe I don’t know how this works, but is it possible that the venue was open to anyone who wanted to rent it between the time it opened and when Tammy Faye moves in this fall? Is it possible that any “legend” could have rented it, but Platt and his producers at Interscope were just the first ones to do so? I’m just confused as to who the “they” are who I keep hearing should have booked a bigger star. Are the owners, James Nederlander and Stewart Lane producing this?

I know, that’s what disappointing. I have nothing against Platt but I wish the theatre was reopening with sold out packed houses by someone with huge demand. It could be someone like Bjork or Sade. Even Lana Del Rey would sell out a short residency. I’d have loved to see Bette Midler or  Cher or someone of their legendary stature open the Palace

How about we start crowning some divas who aren’t pushing 80 and doing fewer and fewer public performances?

How old are you that you think there's not Divas who could fill it? There are several who could have and sold it out in minutes. I mean we kind of have to stop equating Divas to what they were in the 70s and 80s. Would THEY have wanted to do it? That's the question, but if you were going to re-open with a Concert over a production? Well that's what you get.

What they should have done is do a "At The Palace!" Series for the summer and have Broadway stars rotate through weekly doing 2-3 performances a week. Allows them ample opportunity to trouble shoot any issues they may run into and not put the pressure on them to sell out 8 performances of the same person a week.

https://broadwaydirect.com/the-nederlander-organization-on-welcoming-audiences-back-to-the-palace-theatre/

In the spirit of all the greats who have “played the Palace,” from Judy Garland to Liza Minnelli to Diana Ross, and the list goes on, you have invited Tony, Grammy, and Emmy winner Ben Platt to help reopen with a two-week concert beginning on May 28.

NS: It was important to take a moment to acknowledge that an important piece of the Palace’s history is about the single live artist on the stage with their fans. The Palace as a Broadway theatre is unique. Artists have played many stages, but in the historic canon, The Palace is so known for that. And we hope to continue that tradition. We wanted to take a moment and nod to that historical period. It was a wonderful thing: Ben as an artist and theater creature, one of our own, wanted to do a concert and wanted to do music and be on a Broadway stage so quickly after just having done a major role on Broadway [Parade] only a year ago. So it was perfect timing for everything. We couldn’t be happier that it’s a theater artist giving a nod to this great piece of history of the Palace.

Not terribly juicy to report that this was a pretty lovely concert. Late start. Probably 1:45 total. Special guest Kasey Musgraves dueted with him on “Rainbow.” Other covers included River, The Boy Next Door, Maybe This Time, a James Taylor song I’m blanking on the title of, and an exquisite Somewhere Over the Rainbow as the encore. The rest of the show seemed to be divided across his three albums. I didn’t know the material, but it was very well performed.

As for the Palace, it’s a bit disappointing to ride a few stories up a narrow escalator and suddenly find oneself crammed into a jam-packed lobby that doesn’t retain its former glory. But the auditorium itself is glorious, and the additional bathroom access is a delight. 😀

What arrangement of "Rainbow" did he use?

It would have been nice to have Rufus Wainwright do his Judy concert for a weekend. Wonder if that was ever floated...

I swear I'm not trying to stir the pot...but if it's reviewed, and not on the same level as past Palace acts, has any reviewer of any of his previous work used the headline "Ben Platt Falls Flat" yet?

Imagine paying hundreds. For that.

I’ll bet Judy comes back tonight and says a few more things to La Platt.
