Ugh, I do feel bad for her. I’m a huge Jessica Vosk fan and would literally pay to hear her sing the phone book. I really wanted to see her in a successful show. I don’t think it’s failing solely because people want the movie on stage. I think it’s failing because it’s poorly written.

Vosk is undeniably talented but your dollars would be better spent seeing her in concert or a cabaret show where she calls the shots. It’s kinda hard to watch a belter be constrained by a score that is, charitably, best described as flaccid easy listening with the same couplet rhyme scheme

Was at the show last night and the only question I had while watching it is: how is it that Jessica Vosk finally gets to originate a leading role in a new Broadway musical being the ICON that she is, and yet the character she plays cannot get a leading role in a summer stock season? Idk I just find that to be completely unrealistic…

also to the above poster that said her and her younger self played by Samantha Schwartz deserve Tony nominations for the way their carrying this show, I absolutely 100% agree with you

I read it more as her trying to distance herself from the show. She also keeps talking about the movie and Bette’s influence in interviews.

I saw this on Friday and actually kind of liked it. It's earnest and schmaltzy, but that's what I was expecting. I have never seen the movie, so I was able to view the show on its own merits, which I'm sure puts me in a small minority. But the crowd seemed engaged; the woman behind me was crying through the whole second act. I felt feelings.

I saw Beaches Friday night. In Act 2 I was surrounded by tons of people crying. It’s a moving production when it gets out of its own way. The failure of this production falls on the writing and direction. There’s a touching story within it but the construction is all wrong.

Vosk is giving a remarkable performance. It’s worth a rush ticket, but I wouldn’t pay more than that. I paid $45 and was in the second row.

That's fair. I don't think it's a must-see. But I don't think it's the offensive train wreck that others are painting it as. I paid $60ish for my TDF ticket and was center orchestra.

This thread has been so much fun. It reminds me of the old days. I mostly have avoided this site for the sake of my mental health because of the posters with severe personality disorders that I just got sick of. But this thread is both funny and informative.

CINDERELLA did not quite recoup, but PROMISES PROMISES did — fifteen years ago. Before that, COLOR PURPLE, SAIGON, and LES MIS.

GATSBY is expensive so their profit margin is low. I’m wondering how close they actually are to recouping the New York production.

I do think this thread is not addressingthe major elephant in the room here. Because from my understanding, when this was in the development process they could only get the rights to the book that the movie is based on and NOT the actual movie itself. Which sucks because if you couldn’t get the lateroption thenitgreatly limits what the creative teamcan do to begin with. and at that point why even bother?"

People already understand this musical is based on the book. That isn’t the issue. What matters is that the production was able to license Wind Beneath My Wings, which makes it clear they were not completely restricted from the film’s musical world. No producer was going to move forward with a Beaches musical that didn’t include that song, and everyone involved would have known that.

There are also clear examples of shows that secured major pop catalogs when that was the creative direction. Moulin Rouge did it. And Juliet did it. These productions show that if a team wants the music, it is possible to pursue it.

Which is why the real limitation here wasn’t rights. It was the writers choosing to be too precious about their own score. They made the one concession they had to make in order to get the show produced, but they were not willing to build a version of Beaches that reflected the musical identity people associate with a title this iconic. That choice belongs to them, not to the rights situation.
