He's not a composer by definition. He hums a tune and hires Glen Kelly, or someone of that rank (Mr. Kelly's work is quite good on every show he's been a part of, I might add) to "flesh out" and actually write the music. Then takes credit for doing it all and credits those who did the real work with lesser titles. PRODUCERS, IMO should be billed in the very least as "Music by Mel Brooks and Glen Kelly".

and

I do believe Mel should share the composing rights if someone helped him do the work.

Exactly what I was trying to get at but couldn't vocalize (or put into words) - thanks.

Gangway, world, get off of my runway.

A bird cage I plan to hang,
I'll get to that someday...
A bird cage for a bird who flew away
Around the world.

Well then this is going to be easy! Every one of you, go out and hum a score. Write a book and get some financing together! Then go get Susan Stroman and more Tony winners than have EVER been assembled in one show- They will certainly want to work with you because you are so much mor "Real" than that egomaniac Mel Brooks!

Then, your show will make hundreds of millions of dollars and you can buy back the Mark Hellinger theater or make Company run forever or revive Aida with all the original cast! Because you know, it's so easy to do even MEL Brooks can do it! So go- please keep us posted! C'mon- who's done humming their score? Let's get these shows open for the Xmas season!

heil myself!

I think it will be a moderate success. Sell well in the early months then taper off. I don't think, no matter how well it does on Broadway, that overseas producers will be fighting for International Performance Rights, tours etc. Too many people got burnt on productions of THE PRODUCERS. It lost money in Canada, Australia, Britain that I know of. They are the markets that Broadway Producers like all that antcillary money coming from.

I was reacting to the Mel Brooks contempt- He ONLY hums the score to someone who writes it down, it's not FAIR that JUST because PRODUCERS made so much money he gets to make TOO much money on this- and besides, he only DIRECTED YF the movie and Co-authored the script! And, of course, he was the MEANIE who shoved Pirate Queen out into the street so he cousl STEAL that theatre!

He has accomplished something very very very few humans have done- had an extrememely successful show on Broadway. He may (MAY!) even have a second one soon. I was sarcastically pointing out that if it's so easy, every one of us could produce a hit show on Broadway.

I am endlessly amused how a REALLY successful show brings out the knives on this board. Is it my imagination, or is Xanadu a LOT less beloved here since it started selling out?

We're just a little... I don't know... vicariously jealous, because there is(are?) a large number of composers out there with significant musical knowledge that put huge amounts of time and effort into their work, create beautiful music without taking the easy way out and still live an entire life without being recognized, yet some guy with a name comes along and mumbles half-assed tunes into a tape recorder and leaves the actual work to someone else without crediting him in the score. Even though most composers don't do their own orchestrations, they still usually write the accompaniment that the orchestrator fleshes out. The bill should read "melodies and lyrics by: Mel Brooks music by: Glenn Kelly"

but hey, that's the business, right?

This show hasn't even played to a single person----I think it's probably best to wait until someone has actually seen it to decide if it's going to do well or flop. All of the publicity in the world isn't going to save a dog.
And I don't necessary think this board hates successes---I don't recall seeing too much criticism of Jersey Boys----(and that was a success despite very little fanfare---it just happens to be a good show)
