Directors tend to see it as a really obnoxious move on your part, and might not consider you for the role even if you sing it well. At least thats what Ive been told.

You know it and you want it... you just can't believe you've got it.

Let's see. If you sing a song from the role you're auditioning for, and you muck it up, you don't even have a fighting chance.
Occassionally in the audition info they'll specify if they want something from the show. If they don't say anything, then it's safer to do something else.

There are a few great comedic songs in "Cowgirls"
Poor Sweet Baby from "Snoopy"
The Portrait from "A My Name is Alice"
Taylor the Latte Boy -- not sure what it's from
Crossword Puzzle -- comedy -- not sure what show the song is from
Times Like These -- very funny and sweet -- from "Lucky Stiff"

Taylor the Latte Boy is a song by Marcy Heisler and Zina Goldrich. Great song but i don't know that it's best for auditions as i think a lot of people have done it

Yea, Taylor the Latte Boy doesn't really display any special vocal talent. Yeah, Kristin Chenoweth sings it, and she's got a hell of a vocal talent, but that song isnt a good example of it.

The perfect Mezzo-Soprano song in my opinion is "People" from Funny Girl. It's a beautiful song, and perfect for a Mezzo-Soprano. It also evokes emotion, as well, so you get to show off your dramatic and vocal range. I would say go with that.

You shouldn't sing "People". Only sing it if you can erase Barbra's version from their heads---this is why you should generally stay away from famous songs.

Please don't sing songs that are not age-appropriate. Stars and the Moon is a beautiful song, but it should only be sung by a woman who has been around long enough to have lived all the things the lady speaks of in the song. It's just too overdone nowadays and is really best only when sung by a woman with lots of life experience.
This same advice goes for monologues - if you haven't lived it, its gonna be hard to convince someone that you have.

"I don't really get the ending, all i can go with is when after several months,Judith saw Pat sang, and later she kissed him on the toilet, after that the story back to where Pat went down from the stage after he'd sung, and he went to the italian lady.I just don't get it,what Judith exatcly meant when he kissed Pat that she had seen, and did Pat end up together with The Italian Lady? Please help me,thank u very much!" Quote from someone on IMDB in reference to a movie he/she didn't understand. Such grammar!
