Hello! I'm soon to be auditioning for a production of Damn Yankees, and I'm interested in the role of Meg Boyd, Joe's wife. The character type I'm looking to craft is caring, almost motherly. I have found one song already that I am considering, and that is Here Alone from Little Women, but it would be nice to have some other options--I just don't know where to start! My voice type is mostly soprano, however, I'm just as comfortable in an alto and mezzo range. The director already knows my vocal dexterity, so the song I'm looking for is mostly an acting and genre/style deal. If anyone has suggestions around that, I'd really appreciate it! This could help others in the future (or present!) as well. :) Thanks!

Some of these may seem odd, but I think could play them as "motherly":

"Time Heals Everything" (Mack and Mabel)

"If He Walked into My Life" (Mame; one of the all-time great "mother's lament" songs, if as you say, the director already knows your range)

"Children Will Listen" (Into the Woods)

"You'll Never Walk Alone" or
"What's the Use of Wondering" (Carousel)

"So in Love" (Kiss Me, Kate)

"Trina's Song" aka "I'm Tired of All the Happy Men" (Falsettos)

"The Pricklepear Bloom" (Robber Bridegroom; but only if your director has a sense of humor)

"Losing My Mind" (Follies)

"Nothing's Gonna Harm You" (Sweeney Todd)

The above are all songs I think might be interesting if you sang them as if Meg were singing.

ETA Good for you for aiming for Meg. Lola may be the flashier part, but Meg is the heart and soul of DAMN YANKEES. To me, she is the one character who is entirely compelling throughout the plot.
