I was just wondering if really the majority of Broadway fans are in fact gay. Why do i care about this? Because everytime a straight man says he likes Broadway, most people will start making fun of them. Or if i say i like Broadway shows, people tell me im a queen to my face, on the other hand i feel like an outcast because while most of my friends are desperate to see Madonna, i think about Bway and going to NYC or catch a touring show. I'd like to know about BWW's community if anyone is open minded and wants to express their thoughts on this subject or their personal experiences.

I'm straight. I love Broadway. And anyone who knows me knows it. Yes, many of them say that I'm gay and I just don't know it - but they're really just teasing. I mean, Namo has been trying to get me in bed for years now.
But can you really blame the stereotype? It really does seem like ALL the males in the theatre community are gay. But for just as many homosexuals inside the theatre, there are twice as many outside the theatre.
Still - it cannot be ignored that a large percentage of males involved with theatre are gay. If homosexuals are a minority of the U.S.' population, then why is it a majority (or at least 50%) in theatre?
"The Spectacle has, indeed, an emotional attraction of its own, but, of all the parts, it is the least artistic, and connected least with the art of poetry. For the power of Tragedy, we may be sure, is felt even apart from representation and actors. Besides, the production of spectacular effects depends more on the art of the stage machinist than on that of the poet."

Oh - and for a short answer - I blame Jerry Herman.

Well, I want to take a poll and see how real is this stereotype. Are gay men really the majority of users of this site? I think it's just a myth. Most gays i bump into hardly know anything about musical theatre. Well, at least in FL. A lot of New Yorkers also hardly go to see shows on Bway.

Actually, that wasn't the thread that I was thinking of. I posted it without double-checking.
Once upon a time, there was a thread like this, and there were some very logical responses to the question that you are asking. Basically, those responses were along the lines of:
As a group that has been and still is oppressed, gay people will readily use theatre (all forms, including film) as a means of projection whether or not they are performing in or watching a show. It just so happens that theatre, through its creative nature and its natural sense of camaraderie, is a very welcoming and tolerant environment.
Additionally, I'm sure that the stereotypes that have built up around men who sing and dance prevent a good amount of straight men from pursuing performance in musical theatre. So it's sort of a cycle that way.

Visitors to this site? I wouldn't trust any statistic from an online poll.
But here are some statistics for you:
In my theatre dept. at college: 2 of 13 males are gay (actors only. There are 10 male techs who are straight, too).
In a two-week actor training program in NYC I took, 4 of 9 males were gay.
At a summer stock regional theatre I work at now, it seems like EVERYONE is gay...
Frankly, who cares? It's a blessing for the straight man. Especially on tours

"No but i mean seriously, its gayer than gay sex. did anyone see the recent Jesus Christ Superstar DVD. Like WHOA."
Or the costumes from Goodspeed's "Pippin"? Holy hell. It's as if the wardrobe from a gay fetish nightclub in the 80s crash-landed onstage and took the actors hostage.

HAHAHA I know! The straighties were so distracted by the ladies they failed to make an impression - present company excepted, of course.

one of my close guy friends absolutly loves "the last five years" and he is the furthest thing from gay. I think it matters what musical your talking about. The Last 5 Years is as straight as you get. And I also think the stereotype applies to guys...not girls.
I made a list of all your faults, it was quite detailed and lengthy too and when I read it through I missed you. Your like a classic Eagles song, you just cant help but sing along even though it sometimes gets annoying too. I just know I want to be wherever I can wake and see you there next to me. **High Fidelity**

Strange as it may seem, a lot of college students, even theatre majors, don't "come out" until after graduation, so don't place too much credence on your statistics.

Go Go Gadget dumbest thing i've seen on this board is weeks.
when ducks grow thumbs then maybe my opinion will change.
Anything with theatre and high camp is going to attract us queens. We don't need much encouragement. But equally there are many straight people who love theatre and broadway - us gays just appreciate the pretty colour and flashing lights more!!
your a real smart guy it seems that all your opinions are right all the time. YOUR TOP OF THE LINE let me tell you. Again, people on here can be nasty. Its true what I said though, I think it matters what musical you listen too and whether you are a guy/or a girl. But thanks for the nasty comment zone, your a top class guy! or girl...or whatever you are.

A command of the English language does not appear to be a strong point for those posting on this board. Let's hope the gay population does a little better than the population as a whole
