Ah, I can understand the reaction of those who read it like that. I'm far from a "masc only" kinda guy, but this show isn't for me at all, either, so I wasn't reading it that way. Doesn't at all mean my interpretation is right.

And the "masc only" interpretation is definitely wrong, too*. But I'm taking the source of that comment with a grain of salt...
*EDIT: Usually, I would try to soft-peddle an accusation as being definitively "wrong". In this case, however, the assumption is most definitively and completely - wrong.

I am ignoring all of the back and forth in this thread and simply want to make one observation: rich people sometimes spend money for reasons that are not financial. It is not that unusual to see them spending prohibitive (to others) amounts for reasons like believing that something should be extended and/or preserved because they love it, and also for matters of ego (including the avoidance of embarrassment). So preying on such a person's ego is not a bad strategy (although in this case, a public relations specialist might have packaged it in a way that might have been more appealing to a Tory who has never in this century at least lived in NYC in a building that didn't have the name of someone that would have been a dis-qualifier for many if not most.

HogansHero is spot on about producers. In my time in NYC I worked around producers who fit those descriptions along with just wanting to make money and other reasons. They are a very interesting "group" of people when you work semi closely with them. A lot have more passion for their shows, and theatre in general, than a lot of people think. I have literally held a producer as they wept on closing night after seeing how they fought so hard to keep their show open because they believed in it. It wasn't about the money, as that was not an issue. It was the art.
