Rob Marshall to direct new film adaptation of GUYS & DOLLS
 Sep 24 2024, 04:19:31 PM

Ugh, Rob Marshall is a terrible film director. His idea of staging a musical number is to edit it within an inch of its life.

SUNSET BOULEVARD 2024 West End Cast Recording Thread

Agreed. Sunset score pretty much blows except for "With One Look" and "New Ways to Dream"

QueenAlice said: "Jamie Lloyd does everything in his power to distract us from the actual quality of the material, which is one of the reasons why his production is so brilliant."

Awww....I love the score to Sunset. It's probably my favorite ALW score after Jesus Christ Superstar. Aspects of Love is great too, but the book is so horrible

Thought this was a bit disappointing. I haven't heard the 1994 Broadway revival recording since it's not on Spotify, but the London version of the same production is my go-to for this score, and it includes Michael Hayden's performance. The lush orchestrations of that one appeal to me more than the original ones here, and I prefer the grittier, less polished singing from Billy and Julie. It fits their characters more. It is fun to hear all of the things you never get to hear on tr

I haven't seen this production and if I ever have the chance I'll go in with an open mind. But I don't like the sound of it. Sunset Boulevard IS campy. The movie was campy, the musical was designed to be campy. Removing the glitz and opulence is taking away from Norma what makes her Norma. But again, I would be very curious to see this new version for a completely different take on the material.

Am I the only one who really likes The Lady's Paying? It provides a nice counterpoint to all the moody ballads.

Broadway Grosses: Week Ending 7/28/24
 Jul 30 2024, 01:14:32 PM

Possibly very dumb question, but I haven't heard anyone actually say the title of the show "JOB" out loud. So is it job, as in "I need to get a job," or Job, as in the name from the Bible? Asking for a friend.

How Does a Theater Like the Muny Work?
 Jul 29 2024, 09:31:11 AM

I saw an article today about how the full cast and design team for the Muny production of In the Heights has just been confirmed. That show starts on August 9. It seems really late for the cast and design team to just be confirmed now. Does anyone know how a theater like the Muny works, and how it's able to get shows up and running so quickly? I would have thought all of the shows would have been completely planned before the season even started.

Complete CAROUSEL cast recording on its way

So this thread made me interested in the complete recording of Allegro previously mentioned, so I gave it a listen, or at least part of it a listen. It's not a show I knew anything about and had never heard any of the music. I got through Act 1 and...hmmmm...I can see why this one stayed obscure. Got all the way through the first act and still felt like I was waiting for an actual song. Anyone else have thoughts on the show or this particular recording? Is it a good representation of the

Looking forward to giving this a listen, though I doubt it will surpass the 1993 London cast recording for me, which has a special place in my heart.

Also, I didn't think the Oklahoma! recording was awful. It suffers the fate of most studio cast recordings in that it sounds more lifeless than actual cast recordings, but it's great to have the complete score.

Music Man 2000 Revival Cast Recording
 Jul 11 2024, 06:24:56 PM

Anyone know why the cast recording of the 2000 revival of The Music Man is nowhere to be found on streaming services? Or at least not on Spotify. To me it's the most satisfying recording of the show, much more complete than the original cast recording and better sung than the Hugh Jackman revival.

CABARET at the Kit Kat Club (2024) Opening Night Critics' Reviews
 Jun 26 2024, 09:54:17 AM

I know I'm super late to the party here, but I've been traveling a lot lately and wasn't able to chime in back when the Tonys aired.

That Eddie Redmayne performance was jaw droppingly weird and off putting. I could not watch two hours of that. I'd already had a bad reaction to the Redmayne/Buckley London cast recording -- couldn't even get through it -- but seeing Redmayne's physical performance was the nail in the coffin of my interest in this show.

TOMMY To Close on July 21, 2024

Have to admit I feel a little bit of validation over this news. I saw the original and to this day remember it as one of the best things I've ever seen on stage. This revival was so "meh." I didn't understand the point of reviving something and keeping the staging almost exactly the same, except less colorful, less dynamic, and with cheaper, minimalist design. It was like, "let's stage a replica of the original show, but make it worse on purpose in almost every way.

NYP: Broadway sings New York’s blues as crime, costs slow post-COVID comeback
 Jun 5 2024, 03:49:19 PM

I saw this post and noticed that ten of you "liked" it. Normally I stay in the heart of Times Sq and never have any problems with drug addicts and/or homeless. But my sister just planned a last minute trip to New York next week and I have been talked into accompanying her and her family since they dont' know what they're doing and I could serve as a tour guide. The already booked their hotel which is on 8th Av in the mid 30's. My sister and her family are die-hard Tr

Oh good grief, I live in Chicago and it is not true that Chicago is "worse than ever." Chi

Well, that just speaks about quality of the movies she was in...Honestly, boiled potato can act better than Dakota Johnson. Maybe she can be a special guest at Ben Platt's concert! 💡

Thread highjack -- Lol, I know, right? To me, Dakota Johnson sucks the life out of everything she touches, but to each his own.
