re: Worst Speech of the Night?
 Jun 12 2006, 04:52:16 PM
Ok, I wasn't going to get involved in this, but after reading the posts, I feel like I had to - not to trash anyone's opinion, but just to add another perspective on it. Take it or leave it. Above all, though, remember that they were told to keep things personal by the Tony's at the Tony luncheon. Which really means "if you list off a boatload of names, we WILL be cutting you off; but if you give a personal story, we'll try to let you go as long as possible to at least finish your story".

i have officially given up on broadway

I thought I'd chime in on this thread.

I totally respect your right to your opinion. Just a couple of thoughts for you:

Oprah's money has given work and jobs to MANY people in the Broadway community - both in front and behind the scenes. So has Disney's money. Without that money, shows tend to die quickly because Mr. and Mrs. Joe America don't know what they are or why they should spend $110 a ticket on it (except for those rare cases where there is SO much buzz about it th

It was just a subject line. Not an opinion about who the contenders are. I really try to keep the subject lines down, but for people who might want to actually talk about the subjects we're focusing on during the show, the subject line may be the only way they know that the show even exists.

For the record, I have been singing the praises of Drowsy Chaperone on my radio show since I first saw it in Los Angeles LONG before it headed to Broadway. It wasn't a snub to leave it out of th

They're both up for Best Musical. Didn't want to make the subject line ridiculously long by naming all four shows up for the award.

Everyone has their favorites and least favorites for awards. It'll be fun to hear everyone debate their choices and to see overall what the audience thinks will happen and who deserves what.

Hope you'll join us.

the Fosca discussion

I actually agree with you 100%. But my issue isn't that Fosca finally changes, I'm glad she does. But I almost wish he found his great passionate love for her AFTER she backs away from the manipulation. And the discussions that they have about love in the beginning - although wonderful and definitely the kinds of discussions that make you feel affectionate towards someone and a kinship with them - I don't think just feeling the same way about love necessarily makes someone fall in love with
the Fosca discussion

I never laughed at her. I saw the depth of her character, especially as played by the BRILLIANT Donna Murphy. But you brought up a really good point as to what my problem eventually became with her - the manipulation. I just don't think love should be manipulated. I never laughed at her or even hated her. And I understood why he eventually left Clara. And believe me, the show HAD me in the palm of it's hand until the last 20 minutes when I went "hey, wait a minute - something was left out
