i just saw mamma mia and there were people behind me translating the show into spanish for other people are there people from the theater to do that for people? if not is that aloud?
Mamma Mia is a successful enough show that they could afford to get ShowTrans in Spanish.
ShowTrans is a system that works similarly to the infrared listening system for hard-of-hearing patrons (earphones amplify the sound of the show). The difference is that the ShowTrans earphones deliver a timed translation of the show to the patron through the earphones.
I believe there is no charge to the patron -- it's a system that either the theater or the production decides to make available to their audiences.
it depends on the show, theatre, and basically, how much money they have to be able to do things like that. I know Wicked had similar possibilities, with ShowTrans. But smaller shows, I would say it is unlikely.
Right, je veux, but Mamma Mia? Yikes almighty, you'd think with the reported "foreign tourist" component that keeps the show near 100% -- and, like, The Show Is Near 100% Every Week [or was until the meteor hit] --
I got one once, just of curiosity. Admittingly, they're not very useful. They only told you when characters entered, or when they were about to ask someone something important, things along those lines.
I wouldn't mind hearing someone translate behind me. I mean, if they're giving a word for word translation that's one thing, but general translation is another. The way I see it, they paid the same amount as I did, and as long as they're not translating directly into my ear, I'm good.
People live translating at the theatre piss me off to no end and I consistently tell them off at the interval: if you're a tourist and seeing a big tourist show then chances are you booked in advance. It is therefore your responsibility to read a synopsis or look over the cast recording lyrics in advance. It is not my fault, nor the production's, that your 30 year old boyfriend only speaks Polish and can't follow the plot during Starlight Express.
/True story. They told me I should move if they were annoying me. //It's been a year and I'm still bitter. Nothing like having the crux of one's first vacation in years ruined by morons.
