LOL, borstalboy. There certainly ARE good theatre critics in Seattle. David Edward Hughes and Misha Bernson come to mind immediately. While I don't always agree with them, they are both intelligent critics, who display real passion when discussing the art form. Steve Weicking is my personal fave, he always makes me laugh, even though I occasionally disagree with his judgments.

What Seattle doesn't have is any good musical theatre, which is what made me abandon the place. The occasional out-of-town tryouts (HAIRSPRAY, PIAZZA, and this season's PRINCESSES) are the exception, not the rule. The 5th Avenue is a hell hole of a theatre to see ANYTHING in, and their current artistic director is not someone I particularly admire. The Village is a lovely theatre, and they do some terrific work (last season's LA MANCHA, for instance). But it's a bit haphazard, and it tends to be very insular. I wish things were different, but there you have it. Updated On: 11/19/04 at 04:19 PM
