Cry if you want to, but everyone here is no negative and judgemental. Some brought up performances that they saw THE ONE TIME. I mean, come on! Everyone had a bad night. Doesnt't mean they suck.
"broadwaygurl83 ~ You obviously know nothing about the singing voice and how things are supossed to work/sound when singing correctly. Like I said before, Menzel is mediocrity at its best."
That sounds like an attack and the statement of what you seem to think is a fact, to me.
"Broadway Girl 107 ~ You have Idina Menzel's headshot with green eyes as your ID pic for this site. She obviously can do no wrong by you so there is no way you can objective. Enough said."
Slightly judgemental, are we? No wait...that was JUST an opinion. Updated On: 7/26/04 at 12:43 AM
I'm with you BWYGIRL107. So many here are slamming Idina. I know everyone has their opinion, but I don't see any of the slammers being the toast of Broadway, packing in over 1700 people, 8 times a week, and leaving the stage at LEAST twice a night with a standing ovation. OH, but that's only because the stupid audience doesn't know any better, and doesn't know how bad she really is!
Look, I can't claim any expertise on vocal matters, but to me, Menzel sounds like she's yelling. Not just in Wicked, but in The Wild Party and Rent, as well. Just because she can shout a high F, doesn't mean I have to bow to her wonderfulness. I can shout an F, too, but it doesn't make me much of a singer. And generally, I just don't like the sound of her voice. It's a taste thing. Maybe she's tremendously charismatic- I've never seen her perform live, so I don't know. Stage presence can overcome a lot.

That's what i was saying Plum. She's not your style and that's fine. And I wasn't saying you have to bow to her "wonderfulness." I just think it's nice to respect talent, even if it's not your style. There are a few singers who I just can't stand, but I realize it's just not my thing and I acknowledge their talent anyway.
That being said...it's hard to pass a good judgement on Idina's voice if you haven't seen (or heard)her in a live performance...it's really a different story.
Is that the concert version with George Hearn and Patti Lupone or the version with Len Cariou and Angela Lansbury? Because if it's the concert version, Johanna is played by Lisa Vroman.
NYBroadwayNY: Are there any performers I *do* like? As a matter of fact, there are. In no particular order, they are Betty Buckley, Sutton Foster, Hunter Foster, Kerry Butler, Bernadette Peters, Julie Andrews, Terrence Mann, Phillip Quast, Gavin Creel, Jennifer Laura Thompson, Nathan Lane, Judy Garland, Colm Wilkinson, Lea Salonga, Ruthie Henshall, Cady Huffman, Jai Rodriguez, Carly Jibson, John Tartaglia, Stephanie D'Abruzzo, Marisa Jaret Winouker, Susan Egan, Alan Cumming, Tim Curry...shall I continue?
Thanks, Rose! It's good to see someone acknowledge performers in a positive light. It's just after reading this post, it seems that MOST are so eager to be so negative, zeroing in on one performance, or one recording and slamming everything about it.
It reminds me of a phrase, which I'll use regarding this thread:
ARMCHAIR CRITICS. (instead of quarterbacks)
That's what this reminds me of. So many people yelling about how someone is rotten, like they are SOOO much more knowledgeable or talented.
I understand opinions, but, please respect these people that are out there 8 times a week, giving it all they've got.
This thread gives new meaning to the phrase,"everyone's a critic." I have another saying,
Linda Eder's. There is just something about her voice and singing that makes me want to stick a pen in my eye. Her belting sounds so forced and painful (to her AND my ears).
And Bernadette's. I just can't stand her singing. Sorry!
I have so many! Sarah Brightman Michael Crawford Linda Eder Barbara Streisand Charlotte Church Idina Menzel Elaine Paige (only sometimes) Rebecca Luker Anne Reinking Susan Eagan

ETHEL MERMAN okay fine. she was in a lot of classics but she was a bitchy woman with the most annoying voice eever
hmm i dont understand what you guys mean with idina, i simply adore when she belts crazily lol. or rather "vocal filly doo-dads" according to the wild party script :P
"No two shows are alike in the making. Each show is a living
piece of your life in a small unreal world with its own character
and integrity; its own new set of memorable experiences and
incredible happenings. You begin to love and adapt to its strangeness.
Dreams harden into substance. Values come into focus. You wish
it would never end. The dream world vanishes like mist before a
rising sun; part of you vanishes with it. And back you land in the
real world with a thud- fogged, uneasy, jittery, difficult to get
along with. There is only one cure. A new show. A new, small
unreal world; new visions, experiences, incredible happenings.
Again you love it, adapt to it, wish it would never end.
But end it does. Another part of you vanishes.
That's show business."-Anonymous
Whoever it was tha tsings on the Eulogy album...I think it was Betty Buckley. CANNOT stand her voice.
And i'm probably the only person who thinks this, but Heather Headleys voice makes me want to shoot myself! I never saw her live, her her accent on the AIDA cd just drives me up a wall.
ok I may get killed for this but... I dont think kristin is all she's cracked up too be. yes, she was good in Wicked, but thats the limit of her talents as an actress. Maybe she can sing, even if I dont personally enjoy her style, but If she isnt playing an airhead girly-girl with a giggly, high pitched voice, she cant act to save her life. Shes very narrow as an actor, and I do not think that makes her a broadway star.
Also: I DisLike: Ethel Mermen, Mary Louis Burke, Charlotte Church, Linda Eder, etc
And to balence it out I love: Stephanie D'Ambruzzo, Idina Menzel, Bernadette Peters, Lea Solanga, Patrick Wilson, Victor Garber, George Hearn, Angela Lansbury, Gavin Creel, Nathan Lane, etc
