From Light My Candle

"I'm illin'
I had had it
When I walked in the door
It was pure
Is it on the floor?"

Zeitoujo, those happen to be my favorite lyrics not only in Defying Gravity, but from the whole musical in general! That part is so powerful, and is always song wonderfully by whomever actress is playing Elphaba. There are plenty of worse lyrics like "Would it be alright by you, if I degreenify you?" (There's you used twice for a rhyme..." and "Let's have a celebration the Glinda way!" Also, in Happy New Year from Rent "To Dogs! No, Benny, to you!" and I agree with "I'm illin' I had it when I walked in the door." And there's more I'm sure...

Wonderfulwizard11, when I saw SA on Thursday, I noticed that "Jose" was gone missing from And Then There Were None. Moritz sang "Get real OKAY, by now you know the score"
I don't know when that change was made...

This is the first time I tumbled onto this message board, and I felt compelled to register just to mention the lyrics from Brooklyn. All of them. But this section, in particular, really bothered me:

Love was a song, like mist in the spring.
My fingers were young, and could dance on these strings.
And life was a dance, an endless ballet, suspended in time and then swept away.
Fate, like the wind, wild, untamed, left me with nothing but shame!

Maybe it's this section in particular just because it led up to the father using his guitar as a machine gun leading to the one and only time I've ever run out of a theater during a show. I was in the second row and felt awful that I couldn't stop laughing. Thanks the gods that I was on the aisle!

I don't know if this was changed when the show went to Broadway, but on the concept cast of Jekyll and Hyde, "this is the moment, this is the hour, I'll open up tomorow like a flower..."

the lyrics i cringe at in spring awakening (and again, i love it!) are in Touch Me
Touch me just like that.
And that - o, yeah - now, that's heaven,
Now, that i like.
God that's so nice.
Now lower down, where the figs lie.

i just shiver a bit, and not in a good way. but then there is something awkward about any kind of dialogue or sung dialogue like that - as expressed so well in When Harry Met Sally...

i thought in "My Junk" "Junk" meant like Drug in a way. Like "We've all got our junk and my junk is you" like obsession.. i dont know thats what i got out of it. and in "Touch Me" i just think omg they shouldnt sing that they are too young hehe. But i think the songs are brilliant.

I mean I love the song lyrics to "Tonight" and "Maria" from WSS, but if you analyze them a little closer and forget about the lovely music, as much as I think it is truly one of the best musicals, even THAT, alas, is a combination of good lyric writing and dumb lyric writing.

"The most beautiful sound I ever heard, Maria": Well, maybe. You'd almost make a case if you were talking about the Virgin Mary.

"All the beautiful sounds of the world in a single word...": WHAT?! NO!! That word would be "OM", not Maria.

Of course, there's "Tonight". You think we're safe now that we get to a really poignant, important part in the show. NOT A CHANCE!!!

"Only you, you're the only thing I see forever": SHE'S AS DUMB AS HE IS!!! It's even MORE confused because in real life, no one would really EVER fall in love like Tony and Maria did.

"In my eyes and my world and in everything I do. Nothing else but you, ever.": THAT'S EVEN WORSE!!!! Real love doesn't weaken a person's mind; it's supposed to add a precious seeing to the eye! It's like you're doing your normal errands for the day, and then BOOM, you're doing it for her?! I mean, COME ON!! That would never happen in real life!

"Every sight that I see is Maria": SEE AN OPTOMETRIST, WHY DON'TCHA?!

And we can't forget about the absurdly evil words like:

"For here you are, and what was just a world is a star tonight": Well, I'm glad it's still a world, because we'd all burn up if it were a star.

But seriously, I'd say those songs are two of the best songs in the world, save for those weirdly absurd lyrics.

Oh people come on be real

I think its pretty obvious where the worst lyrics come from

Carrie The musical (had some great songs and lyrics but then some mind numbingly stupid ones)

Dont Waste The Moon
Chris Sings To Billy "i think your the victim of an active gland"

Out For Blood
Chris Sings To Billy "it's a simple little gig you help me kill a pig and ive got some plans for the blood"

Out For Blood
Chorus Sings "kill the pig pig pig kill kill kill kill and make it bleed, get the blood blood blood oh blood, kill the pig make it bleed get the blood it's all we need, for blood"

IN
Girls sing " and i worry, what if all my ends should split"

IN
Girls sing "bought the coat, did my nose, god i followed ever rule"

Dont Waste The Moon
Girls Sing To Guys "we would go bowling if you really cared"

and so on and so on

I dunno, you might have some tough competition from a few of the lyrics from applause. :P Like, Backstage Babble.

"ba-duh-ba-duh ba,
Margo was ba-duh-ba"

"heebee-deeby-dee!
critics will certainly dubadubaduba" :P

Those are some pretty bad ones. The rest of the lyrics aren't great, but not that bad.

Exactly MamawhoBoreme. "Junk" is slang for heroin. In the song, they even say "I go up to my room, turn my stereo on, shoot up some you..."

So it is like saying, "We've all got our addiction, and my addiction is you."

Also, if you listen, I don't believe the addiction is a person, but actually referring to "you" as the act of masturbation itself. Which if you think about it is kind of funny, because then becomes a love song being sung to the addictive act of self-pleasure itself.

And don't forget: "They say you go blind, maybe it's true.
We've all got our junk, and my junk is you."

I love it!

I have to disagree with the poster who quoted Mimi's lines in RENT (I'm illin'; I had it when I walked in the door; it was pure; is it on the floor?)
I'm illin' is good use of slang for a character like Mimi, and explaining that the drugs were pure show why she is so spazzy about getting it back, and then asking if its on the floor sets up the line about her having a nice butt.

BUT ANYWAY, in LES MISERABLES, at the barricade scene, a soldier offstage (it usually sounded recorded) sang the following lines:

You at the barricade listen to this
No one is coming to help you to fight
You're on your own
You have no friends
Give up your guns - or die!

So there is a big group of friends at the barricade, and he tells them that they have no friends. I know he means that they collectively have no friends of their group, but still. I figured that when they put the words in English that it was just a weak translation.

Hmmm... Me thinks someone has either never been in love or was just in a BAD break-up.

You know, you kinda got that right. I have never been in love, and I don't PLAN on being in love. You see, all you gotta do is say hello to a girl, [strangely slips into song], and they've got you whisperin' in her ear!

All you gotta do is be polite with her,
And they've got you spendin' the NIGHT with her!
If there's a girl you'd merely have a beer with,
They've got you settin' a wedding date!
It seems they've just gotta have some dirt to bend your ear with;
So before you start, I herewith state...

I'm NOT at all in...
I'll stop here.

BwayBaby18 ~ I thought it was "I'd sooner try defying gravity". Makes a little more sense that way...even if it's wrong. :)

The one I never got (and maybe this is because it was written by a Frenchman) was the line Ellen says to Chris in Miss Saigon, "she still thinks she's married to you. Of course, it only depends if it's true".

Depends on what? That's not quite gramatically correct....

I thought it was "I'd sooner try defying gravity". Makes a little more sense that way...even if it's wrong.

"Try defying gravity" is the way it's sung the first time, for sure. It's only sung as "buy defying gravity" after the lyric "if that's love, it comes at much too high a cost". It's not entirely random, as there's a correlation between cost and buy.

Though "buy" would be used in "buy defying gravity" as "accept, believe in, ascribe to", like one would say "I just don't buy that".

Of course, it is a bad lyric. It's just not a nonsensical lyric.

Anyway. All of the really awful lyrics from Wicked are among my ironic favorites. If I had to choose a lyric I really think is awful it'd be from For Good, probably. Degreenify > Handprint on my heart any day of the week.
