You're right, and Oscar trumps Tony everytime, and actually he has three Academy Awards.

I doubt Godspell has even been out of production since the licensing was originally released. Pippin has been permanently branded into Fossedom. And Wicked shows no signs of ever slowing down. Even the Tonys eventually can't ignore that.

He'll never win.
And regarding the "Jerry Herman never won until he came out" comments-
Everyone on Broadway knew he was gay when he won for Hello, Dolly!. He wasn't embarassed or affraid to come out.
And Schwartz has been married for many years and has children, I think. I don't think there's any chance for a surprise "Honey, I'm gay" in his future.
AND I don't think they really care if you're gay or not gay or whatever anymore. Alex Cohen might have, but not now.

Is there some sort of TOS on this board that says we have to hate Stephen Schwartz?
I agree he sometimes writes lyrics that are too convoluted to be understood in the theater, but I don't understand the extreme hatred here.

People have simply stated that he has yet to write a deserving score, and statistics seem to back that up. It is also being pointed out that he is a sore loser. None of that is hatred, just simply stating what seems to be obvious to many people here.

What "statistics" determine whether a score is "deserving" or not?
I don't know why anyone cares whether he was disappointed over losing the Tony to "Avenue Q." Hell, Patti Lupone WON a Tony for "Gypsy" and then bitched during her acceptance speech that it took so long for voters to give her a SECOND Tony!
While it's true that "Magic Show" was dominated by the tricks, it's still a fun score in the recording and provided a lot of girls with audition material in "West End Avenue" and "Lion Tamer."
"Pippin" and "Godspell" were much beloved in their day and the latter (along with "JSC" and "Hair") was very influential in attracting pop fans who otherwise thought they didn't care for Broadway. I believe both have spawned hundreds of stock and amateur productions.
As for "Wicked", I'm surprised that people think the score is so lacking. Myself, I like much of that score and there are moments--such as giving "Loathing" an uptempo, Latin beat--that are brilliant.
So if "undeserving" just means people think Schwartz has never had the best score in any year he's had a premiere, fair enough. But posters in this thread seem to be using "undeserving" as if it were some sort of mathematically demonstrable nadir.
Perhaps your statistics will make this clear to me.

He is married, he does have children, but anyone on BWW should know that's no guarantee of any sexuality. In fact, it likely increases the chances for a surprise "Honey, I'm gay" in this sordid business. Whether he is or isn't, I can't say. I can say I've heard things.
