Which show do you folks like better? Personally, I think Avenue Q is much more original in every aspect. What do you think>

You are quite the brave one to begin this thread...

Saw both. Loved them equally.

Not to mention it's been discussed to death....

well since I'm new to the boards and haven't discussed it before I'll tell ya my 2 cents. I haven't seen AQ but don't think I would enjoy it because after the 3 songs performed yesterday I did not want to run out to see it. It was funny and very original but MY kind of fun or MY kind of enjoyable show is one like Wicked, singable songs, touching, funny yet sentimental, visually beautiful with actors voices making my hair stand up!

Thank the Lord that Dracula's first preview is still set to go ahead tonight, so there's something else to talk about from tomorrow.

Nothing precious, plain to see, don't make a fuss over me. Not loud, not soft, but somewhere inbetween. Say sorry, just let it be the word you mean.

At LAST, somebody has taken up this topic. It has never been brought up before but it has been the proverbial elephabant in the room that nobody will talk about. That's why you never even see threads about these shows individually. Thank you, Yankeefan, for ripping the lid off the deafening silence about these two shows.

I haven't seen them, but I like the music to Wicked better, and would most definitley prefer to see that. Hey, I would jump at the opportunity to see any Broadway show, even Avenue Q, but I prefer Wickedis music to Avenue Q's.

This is the silliest thread.
I love both shows. They are very different.
A VERY TOUCHY SUBJECT.
But my pick is Q!
Millie- If you have not seen Q, how do you know you will like Wicked better?
I have seen both. They are both excellent but Q is a must see! Updated On: 7/30/04 at 12:32 PM

Is that grading on a curve? Cuz when I saw Wicked it was like D+ or maybe very low C.

"I should say so!"

BTW, Avenue Q DOES have singable songs.

I always walk around and sing "You can be as loud as the hell you want..."

Yoohoo, she said she likes Wicked's music better than Avenue Q's music. You don't need to see the show to know which music you like better. I'm guessing she has listened to songs for both shows.

Without seeing the show you can't really appreciate the humor of Q!
It needs to be seen before being heard! It is the most charming, edgy, adorable and sick musical. It is hysterical!
It is also very addictive.

It sucks to be me
The internet is for Porn

These two titles, let alone the songs are not my type. I enjoyed It sucks to be me but would not play it again at home whereas the Wicked CD is played over and over because THAT music appeals to me. Its not about whats BETTER its about different strokes for different folks and Defying gravity rules over ISTBM anyday in my book.

This is an interesting topic. I think they are almost too different to compare.

Music- Wicked's music and lyrics have obvious weaknesses, but I do find the cast recording enjoyable. Q is much more original, but the songs aren't particularly enjoyable as music for me. They're funny, but I don't really love any of them enough to listen to repeatedly, except for Fine, Fine Line. Overall, I would have to say I like Wicked better because I think the music is pretty, if not the best in theatre. Though Q is hysterical (I honestly could not breath through 'My girlfriend lives in Canada') it's not really listen-able for me. But that is a personal preference.

Book- Q was better. Wicked had a lot of things that could have been tightened and fixed, but Q was consistently funny and touching. Love it. Wicked had some really great scenes, (For Good, primarily) but Q was overall better.

Acting- Wow. I must say that I was very impressed with the Q's actors' abilities to bring sincerity and humor to roles that could have come off as corny because of puppets. But Wicked... Idina made my hairs stand up during No Good Deed and Defying Gravity, and Kristin is hauntingly beauitiful in her solo in the finale. And For Good is amazing. The leading ladies of Wicked outshined the rest of the cast. Q was more of an ensemble piece and everyone was good. But they were written to be that way, with Wicked focused on Glinda and Elphaba and Q a group effort. I can't decide, but I am leaning toward Wicked.

Set- I actually preferred Q's set. Wicked was nice, but I didn't love it. Maybe it was just too impressive for me, like it was trying to take over the show. Q's set was just right for me.

Overall... I really can't decide. These shows are really apples and oranges and I do not know how to pick one. I love them both, but in entirely different ways.

Having finally seen them both, I thoroughly enjoyed both, but Avenue Q is a better show including book, score, and originality. Wicked is dazzling, but uses visual effects to make up for its weaknesses in plot and music. Avenue Q has no weak spots. It's a strong show that remains even from beginning to end.
