Among most recent shows it would have to be XANADU. In all honesty, I didn't expect much as I saw the execrable film on which it is based, which itself was a rip-off of a superior 1947 musical film, starring Rita Hayworth, called DOWN TO EARTH. But I gave in to the pressure of some friends who were dying to see it (and thankfully paid for my ticket). My worst fears were realized as the stage musical surpasses the film by leaps and bounds in mediocrity and that is saying a lot. Also, I found Kerry Butler’s performance and voice to be extremely annoying, hardly how one should react to an actress playing a muse. Although no better an actress but a far more talented singer, Olivia Newton-John at least had charisma which made the film less painful in this respect. Cheyenne Jackson was not any more appealing, although to be fair this kind of material could make anyone seem vapid. Most disappointing was Jackson’s singing, which was about as generic as any 1990’s boy band singer. I suspect that without the aid of the excessive miking employed, Jackson, Butler or any of the performers voices would not project past the stage lights, but again to be fair that is a criticism that could be leveled against the majority of today’s Broadway singers. XANADU might have been more tolerable with no sound at all.
Not any on Broadway, but community theatre, probably Urinetown...I went because my friend was in it but it was sooo boring. & recently I went to see JCS because lots of my friends were in it...they were good but the production was horrible...dancing during every number? really? ugh.
Chicago Chicago Chicago! UGGGGGHHHHHHH! I hated that show! Also Spring Awakening, it left me with a gross feeling and it left me with the message of how dumb kids were in that show and the songs didn't make sense. I can home tried to understand why people liked it and then took a shower(UGGGHHHH!) Oh and of course Xanadu.
Dr. Dolittle was pretty horrific when I saw it on tour.
I am a firm believer in serendipity- all the random pieces coming together in one wonderful moment, when suddenly you see what their purpose was all along.
A Catered Affair. Although I did like meeting Harvey Fierstein. He was super nice. But it was such a waste. Especially because I wanted to see South Pacific so badly it hurt. I still do. Also All Shook Up was bad. And Zombie Prom if anyone has ever seen that.
