I haven't felt this old in quite a while. What is the average age of the people who post on this message board?
When I think of my all-time favorite musical, nothing recent would even come to mind. PHANTOM? God no. RENT? Nope. MILLIE? No way. DANCE OF THE VAMPIRES? I'm still giggling over THAT one.
In considering the score, the book, the production itself (i.e. sets, lighting, costumes, etc.), without a doubt, only one show satisfies on all levels...
SWEENEY TODD.
Best musical of the last few decades, hands down.
Itty Bitty Geisha?
Toyland?
Gypsy Pasadoble?
Just a few popular favorites...
There are too many others to count and name, but I think The Life was highly underrated and ran too short. Think Thoroughly Modern Millie is classic Broadway.
I'll have to agree with scooter. Sweeney Todd has the best plot of any Broadway musical. I mean, who in their right mind would know that the beggar is Sweeney's wife before the end? Perfectly marvelous! (Yes, that's a nod to my other favorite "Cabaret,")
"I don't understand. Everything's coming up Roses' WHAT?"-Jerome Robbins to Stephen Sondheim
I love Aida, Hairpray and tick, tick...BOOM (even though it was off-broadway).
A ripple on the edge can be a tidal wave; no matter what the size.
Anything can be, depending how you see when you're looking at the world with brand new eyes.

SondheimFreak...I was in the audience during the last week of previews of the original production of SWEENY TODD...I intuited that the Beggar Woman was Sweeny's wife sometime before Act One. It is a pretty obvious plot device. Sorry to disappoint.
On the flip side, my favorite play is Take Me Out. I've seen it 2 1/2 times. ( I happened by the theater at intermission and someone I know associated with the show gave me an unused ticket to watch the second half.) Great cast and a very funny and poignant show.
La Cage Aux Folles-0. Opening night of the revival in 2005 w/ Dollypop as my date will be my first experience.
Jekyll & Hyde-Twice on Broadway, once on tour, once in a community theater production-the guy who played Jekyll was so bad that he couldn't do "Confrontation" by himself. They taped him doing the Jekyll part and he sang into a tv screen which was supposed to be a mirror. Unintentionally funny; countless times on video even though Hassellhoff butchered the part.
Albin, you are a presumptuous insect! Do you still think I would be your date for the Opening Night of LA CAGE's revival????? I may have considered that a while back, but after seeing that picture of you, I wouldn't be caught dead on your arm!
Remember, I am a gentleman of excellent taste, and the only taste you have is in your mouth!
The nerve!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
"Life is not measured by the number
of breaths we take, but by moments
that take our breath away."
"Life isn't about how to survive the storm,
but how to dance in the rain."
hands down - Millie - 3 (soon to be 4) times since 1/31/03 when I "discovered" the oh-so-talented Ms. Foster. A little scary, but it's healthy I promise...
"Some of us have it worse, you know, Dana. Some of us are dating lesbian men. Okay? C'mon."
It's a tie between Thoroughly Modern Millie and 42nd Street 42nd Street- twice Thoroughly Modern MIllie- 3 Times Both shows satisfy me in both book, score, sets, definitely costumes, and certainly actors and actresses. (Well, most)

Mr. Lawlor, I read your last posting and was deeply chagrined by your spelling! Now, come up to the blackboard and CORRECTLY write the word "definitely" 100 times!
I'm very sorry, DollyPop. I thought I was improving. I will complete your assignment, as well as a 250 word essay about the importance of correct spelling.
Oh, you're a fine lad, indeed! When you submit your essay, I will reward you with two front row seats for Melanie Griffith's break-through performance in CHICAGO. Aren't you the lucky one!
Between 1976 and June of this year, I have been to Broadway 143 times. Some of these times are some shows which I have visited more than once. Here are several of my favorites. Some of these I would love to see back on Broadway again.
The Wiz (original production) (seen 12 times) Dreamgirls (original) (seen 3 times) Revival seen 4 times The Tap Dance Kid (seen twice) Once On This Island (seen 3 times) Beauty and The Beast with Toni Braxton (seen twice) Sunset BLVD Miss Saigon Joseph and The Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat, revival (seen twice) Les Miserables Cats Phantom A funny Thing Happened On The Way To The Forum (seen twice) Aida (Seen 5 times) Chicago Annie Get Your Gun with Reba McEntire La Boheme (Baz Luhrmann's) (Can any production of La Boheme get any more beautiful than this?)
Yes!!! The Franco Zeffirelli production which is currently on stage at the Met. It's beautiful sets and costumes put the Luhrman production to shame. I've seen it 28 times!
I guess this is a big fat duh, but Cabaret. Seen it 34 times, 35 this coming week. I've done lots of research on the show, and I can safely say no matter what incarnation I see, it's still my favorite show. One of my favorite moments in theatre is the kickline right after intermission...it's a seamless way of transitioning into the mood and themes of the second act, and the lighting, costumes, choreography, and historical accuracy is just perfect.
