So I'm listening to Tick, Tick...Boom and it sounds so much Like Rent. Yes, I'm aware that they both were written by Jonothan Larson and because both shows were written by the same person, of course they'll have certain similarites, but I think that the music in these two shows are SO similar. IMO, parts of "No More" sounds almost identical to "Rent". And the main character sounds a lot like Roger at times (and also like Mark at other times). I just wanted to find out what you all though about this. Its not a bad thing, just something to think about. Do you think it could have influenced RENT quite a bit? I really like both shows, so I'm not complaining or anything, I just was wondering if anyone else noticed it.
Yes, well, you said it , same composer... And remember that Tick Tick is somewhat autobiographical, therefore there are similar sounds, moments and characters in both.
Listen, I don't take my clothes off for anyone, even if it is "artistic". - JANICE
I agree, but it's simply because the same composer has a similar style. I even find myself singing "Will I?" in my head during "Come to Your Senses" - similar chord structures.
Although a few similarities exist, I find them to be very different. I am one of the people (in the minority?) who don't like the music of RENT all that much. Some of it is very good, but most of it goes by like elevator music. TTB, on the other hand, is something I could listen to over and over. Although the book is weak, the score is wonderful.

I was actually just listening to "No More", and I was thinking how much parts of it sound like "Rent." But like you said, they do have the same composer.
tick tick BOOM wasn't originally intended to be produced professionally as a musical. It was a one man show Jonathan Larson performed based on his own life during the time when he was working on Rent. It did influence Rent because his own life was similar to the lives of the characters in Rent, so there are quite a few parallels. I don't think Jonathan Larson would have continued with tick tick BOOM after Rent, because it was so similar. It was only done after his death and the success of Rent because people wanted to hear more of his work.

I believe the original Off-Broadway production of RENT listed two songs that were cut before Broadway (and possibly during the run at NYTW): “Door/Wall” and “No More.” I always assumed it was the same song as the one in TTB.
