Holy moly, a petition that actually worked. 
According to VocalLizzy, who started the petition, co-producers Robert Fox and Ben Gannon spoke to her yesterday at the closing and told her that there will indeed be a DVD of The Boy From Oz.
Congratulations on the successful results of your hard work, Lizzy. Seriously, I can't believe it. It would almost enough to make me believe in Santa Claus again, if I ever believed in him in the first place. :)

Not a clue. It obviously wasn't a studio filming a la Oklahoma, but they must have gotten it done some time during a live performance, Sweeney Todd-style.
Oh, and heaven help us all, but there's photos of Ms. Walters' lap dance.

Posted: 9/13/04 at 12:35pmI just can't imagine the producers spending the huge amount of money required to record a performance due to speculation of a "potential" release and then making the decision to release a DVD based in part on a petition. Surely someone would have mentioned that the show was in the process of being recorded? Or they would have mentioned the camera trucks outside? Updated On: 9/13/04 at 12:35 PM

I am here to announce that while there is no exact time frame at the moment, or indications whether it will be a previously recorded performance of the New York production or a future incarnation of the show...

Maybe they'll release a good show on DVD next. Don't get me wrong, Hugh was great but the show was still "eh".

"The Boy from Oz" was recorded for the New York Public Library's TOFT collection on April 28, 2004. So a video does exist, although quality is unknown.
By the way, this is such a great thing to have done; when I signed the petition I felt a bit like Man of La Mancha--you know, tilting at windmills. (Oh, and isn't Robert Fox extremely handsome?)

I can't imagine a TOFT archive video being suitable for DVD release. I don't think the archive video can be altered in any way after the recording is made. It can't go through post editing etc. It would also go against the purpose of TOFT.

I hate to say it, but I agree with you, Matt. I hope that between this and the filming of Caroline, more really good productions get filmed and released.
Of all the shows I've seen this year, only one (Chicago) will be open at the end of the year. How amazing would it be if productions like Assassins and Frozen could have been preserved for posterity? It's a shame the audience will almost never justify the filming costs unless the show has a full-blown cult ready to spend a lot of money like BFO did.

Posted: 9/13/04 at 2:52pmThey actually film all Broadway shows at some point during the initial run. If you're in NYC, you can view them at the Lincoln Center Performing Arts Library (but only shows that have closed on B'way).

Posted: 9/13/04 at 2:58pmMost of the time you have to be a "qualified researcher" meaning you have a very good reason to need to see it (directing another production, making it into a movie, writing a thesis or something of that nature). The general public can't usually see these things.
