Wildparty20, thanks for posting your wonderful thoughts about THE HIGHEST YELLOW. I desperately wish I could see it, but am nowhere near D.C. at the moment, and simply can't get there at this time.

I do love this particular thing that you said in your post, and am happy to refute it:

"I don't know why others don't hear what I do."

Well, I hear it. And so do many others. I truly believe that LaChuisa, out of all of the composers working on Broadway today, has the most talent. While his talent is often inaccessible to mainstream audiences, and his material requires a huge commitment on the part of an audience member, for me, that is the most rewarding kind of theatrical experience.

The thing I love most about LaChuisa is his breadth of knowledge. He is an expert on so many diverse things, and the proof lies in the subject matters of his musicals: first ladies, european princes, jazz babies, sexual deviants, psychotic artists, mothers who commit infanticide.

While I know it is rather presumptious to make blanket statements which predict future historical trends, I stand by this one: Michael John LaChuisa will eventually garner a huge critical reputation, and his works will get the attention they deserve, at some point in the future. Hopefully for him, it will be sooner rather than later. Hopefully for all of us really, because any artist deserves to know that they are brilliant while they're still living and working. (Which brings up an interesting parallel to Van Gogh, when you think about it.)
